That’s the thing about Valentine’s Day: you can love it, you can hate it, but you can’t ignore it. If you’re wondering how could someone ever hate this day of love, think about those people who’re still single or have just broken up.

Surely, being without a partner can make you feel lonely—a little more when people around you are constantly sharing expressions of love and celebrating romance.

“Loneliness can bring more anxiety, stress, and depression than bliss for some people as there is constant pressure from the mind to prove your love for someone or to feel loved in return,” points out Dr Poonam Poonia, Ph.D in clinical psychology and psychotherapist at Wellstar Clinic Diagnostic Pvt. Ltd., Gurugram.

“And being in a romantic environment, watching others feeling pampered by sending and receiving gifts to their partner can make it worse,” she adds.

So, if you’re single this Valentine’s Day and not feeling so great about yourself, here is how you can beat the loneliness and enjoy the day.

1. First, rethink your approach
“Being single is a bonus, a celebratory moment, and the one that is often overlooked,” Dr Poonia points out. So, rather than complaining about it, enjoy it while you have the luxury.

After all, singlehood leaves you with all the time in the world to focus on yourself without having to take into account someone else’s feelings.

Come on, ladies! Don’t you just love it when your committed friends are giving explanations to their partners about where they are and when they’ll be home, while you’re simply relaxed and enjoying the comfort of not being answerable to anyone?

“Enjoy your singlehood and embrace these moments. Use them to learn to be comfortable with yourself. And this will make you more appealing and complete when you find someone who compliments you,” she adds.

2. Bond with people, who share the same interest
Ladies, you’ve got to know one thing fosho. You’re not the only single woman on the planet. There would be many women out there, probably even in your own friend circle, who’d be single. So, how about using this day to strike new bonds and friendships by reaching out to them rather than sulking about your loneliness?

“Surround yourself with people with positive vibes and common interests. This can make you feel complete and positive,” says Poonia.

3. Don’t forget to celebrate love, regardless
The legendary Saint Valentine went to jail for marrying Roman soldiers who were forbidden from matrimony in secret Christian ceremonies. So, yes, that romantic kind of love is worth being celebrated on his birthday.

But, did you know, the saint is also appreciated for caring about his fellow prisoners and for curing the jailor’s blind daughter with love? This defo calls for a celebration of all kinds of love in this world, don’t you think?

The friendly, the familial, and even the one you feel for your office bestie—you can choose to celebrate any kind of love that you value in your life on Valentines’ Day, girl!

“Being with your partner on this day and having the best time of your life with him is just a myth, which can be handled if you choose to think about the other people they love,” says Dr Poonia.

“Spend some time with your friends and family. Invite the people you love over for lunch or dinner, plan a movie date with them, go for a long walk in the park with ‘em, or simply go for a spa together,” she suggests.

4. Or simply be your own Valentine
Let this day be the perfect start to learning how to enjoy your own company to grow and mature as a happier individual. After all, how can you expect your future partner to like your company if you don’t like it yourself?

Dr Poonia suggests giving yourself a treat or stepping out looking like a million bucks to feel good about yourself or simply pampering yourself with a refreshing spa session or enjoying a movie in bed in order to celebrate your love affair with, well–yourself.

5. Lastly, keep yourself occupied
The fact that Valentines’ Day has still not been declared as a worldwide holiday is a blessing in disguise for every single person on the planet. Because you know what? This gives you the perfect opportunity to keep yourself busy with work and prevent your mind from overthinking your singlehood.

So, wrap up that pending office presentation, hit the gym, clean up your wardrobe, finish pending chores—basically, keep yourself distracted and treat it like any other day.
