Valentine’s day is around the corner, and even if you aren’t a hopeless romantic, it’s bound to make you feel a little fuzzy in your stomach. That’s because there’s an outpouring of love everywhere around you. People try to swoon each other with flowers, chocolates, gifts or candlelight dinners—and if you aren’t a part of the tribe, it’s but natural for you to feel left out. Yes, it’s time to address the proverbial elephant in the room: what if you are dealing with a heartbreak during Valentine’s season?

Well, you might want to lock yourself up in a room, put on some sad music and cry. And we completely understand, because this time can be really taxing on your mental and emotional health. But wait, we are here to help you. Ladies, we have some great ways for you to cope with this situation. So, are you ready to find out?

1. Take a moment to recognise your feelings

We know it’s hard but do not suppress your feelings. Give yourself the liberty to really feel your emotions. If you want to cry, don’t stop yourself from crying out loud. It’s natural that you are going to feel terrible about dealing with a heartbreak during this time, but tell yourself it’s fine. Unless and until you let the negative emotions out, you can’t ever have love again.

2. Practice self-love and nurture your relationship with yourself

Even if you are with someone, you need to develop a strong relationship with yourself. That’s the most important relationship you will have in your life. So, give time to yourself, check in how you are feeling, and try and turn negative feelings into positive ones but step by step. If you feel lonely, you can always try and socialise with your friends. If you feel sad, then focus on things that you have and practice gratitude. It’s going to make you feel a lot better!

3 Go out with your girls

We aren’t saying going out with your partner isn’t amazing. It is a different experience altogether! But this Valentine’s, spend some time with your gals. Slip into your favourite dresses, wear a bright red lipstick (or any other colour) and go dancing. Trust us, it will be a fun date night with the girls. After all, what’s more important than lasting female friendships?

4. Send love to committed friends

We know, we know how you feel like spewing hate on those who are committed. But don’t feel negative: instead, send out love and positive thoughts to those who have a good relationship with their partners. Valentine’s is all about love, so how about telling your close friends and family how much they mean to you? It’s going to make them feel so good.

5. Get moving

It’s not easy to pick yourself up and start exercising, especially when you feel low. But it’s the secret pill that’s going to make you feel so much better! You could plan a fun kickboxing session or an intense workout at the gym. Not only will it feel cathartic, but it will also release so many happy hormones, and improve your mood.
