Brad Pitt reveals he felt alone all his life and dealt with ‘low-grade depression’Published on: 23 June 2022, 16:09 pm IST
Depression can clutch anyone in claws. Even people who look like they have everything they desire. Hollywood star Brad Pitt’s revelation about dealing with low-grade depression was shocking news to discover. An actor who’s loved for his stellar performances in his movies and swoon-worthy looks is actually struggling with a mental illness behind closed doors. Recently, in a magazine interview, Brad Pitt confessed about feelings of loneliness and what made him come out of it.
The 58-year-old actor laid bare his mental state as he revealed how he spent years in a ‘low-grade depression’. The Troy actor also spoke about not being able to ‘embrace’ people in his life truly until recently.
Pitt told GQ, “I think I spent years with a low-grade depression, and it’s not until coming to terms with that, trying to embrace all sides of self—the beauty and the ugly—that I’ve been able to catch those moments of joy.”
What led to Brad Pitt’s brush with depression?
The actor had to undergo an ugly split with wife Angelina Jolie in 2016, after a domestic abuse allegation. The Maleficent actress got physical custody of their 6 children while Pitt received the visitation rights. This dent in his relationship clearly made Pitt feel a little distraught.
However, the actor was able to maintain composure and soared high even in the lows. Brad Pitt got his newfound urge for a healthier lifestyle only after the annulment of his marriage to Jolie. Brad also revealed that he spent almost a year-and-a-half in an alcoholic rehab center and sobered up. Along with severe lifestyle changes and quitting alcohol, the actor also cut cigarettes completely during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I don’t have that ability to do just one or two a day. It’s not in my makeup. I’m all in. And I’m going to drive into the ground. I’ve lost my privileges,” Pitt said in a GQ interview.
This is what Brad Pitt said about his struggle with loneliness
During his interview, Brad Pitt also mentioned that he has felt alone all his life and everyone’s “hearts are just broken”.
“I always felt very alone in my life, alone growing up as a kid, alone even out here (in Los Angeles), and it’s really not till recently that I have had a greater embrace of my friends and family. What’s that line, it was either Rilke or Einstein, believe it or not, but it was something about when you can walk with the paradox, when you carry real pain and real joy simultaneously, this is maturity, this is growth.” he said.
The 58-year-old star also told GQ about his recurring dreams about stalkers emerging out of the darkness and stabbing him. Pitt learned to analyze what these dreams could mean. It was his inside battle with loneliness that made him feel completely unsafe.
As they say, the darkest clouds come with a silver lining, Brad Pitt squeezed out little joy from the somber moments.
“Music fills me with so much joy. I think joy’s been a newer discovery, later in life. I was always moving with the currents, drifting in a way, and onto the next.” said the Ad Astra actor.
With Pitt coming out and sharing his experience with depression, many will get hopes of fighting the battle on their own. With some great projects like Bullet Train in his kitty, we wish Pitt has enough reasons to spread joy and find happiness again.
