Where there’s love and respect, age rarely matters! As Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif, 38, and Vicky Kaushal, 33, tied the knot in a widely talked about, yet hush-hush gala wedding recently, guess what became one of the talks of the town? The answer lies in the emphasis of their age! Yes, it was their 5-year age gap.
Of course, we would like to believe that times have changed and marriages or relationships have moved beyond the stereotype of an older man-younger woman, successful man and not-as-successful woman. But reality bites!
Every time there is a female celebrity who marries a younger man, there is a little brouhaha! Think Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Abhishek Bachchan, Urmila Matondkar-Mohsin Akhtar, Soha Ali Khan-Kunal Kemmu, Neha Dhupia-Angad Bedi or Amrita Singh-Saif Ali Khan.
However, what may be seen as a taboo by some, is also seen as “breaking sexist norms” and “redefining gender stereotypes” of sorts by some like actress Kangana Ranaut. The controversy ‘queen’, via an indirect Instagram comment, lauded the Indian film industry’s “leading ladies” – rich and successful women – for taking a route that would have meant a “crisis” for ladies once upon a time.
But for those who have kept love above all else, the age stereotype is just that – a stereotype, and has had no or little bearing on their relationship.

Our relationship, considering the age gap, did meet its disagreements in the beginning from people around us. But it never even crossed our minds. It has been 4 years together and like any other relationship, we bring two personalities on the table and that has worked great for us. There’s constant energy, exchange of ideas and happiness to experience new things together, and learn things from our respective generations.
It’s like any other relationship between two people on this planet.. the age gap makes it no different.

For us, the age gap was never a problem. I feel that if your mental level matches and you understand each other well, it shouldn’t be a problem. And maybe it also depends on how responsible a guy is and whether he is settled or not. These should be the things that a person should consider instead of just focusing on the age gap. On a lighter note, whenever we fight, I can always laugh and tell him, “Main aapse badi hun na… zyaada duniya dekhi hai maine!”

To be honest, the age gap between me and my husband is not that much. He is just 4 years younger to me, but at times I really think that I’m dealing with a kid. Having said that, we have our fun times! But sometimes I really miss out on those mature conversations. Frankly, I’m not sure whether it’s a matter of age or two people just clicking because I think experience also matters to sustain a relationship. But we are working on it. Hope we will pass the litmus test with flying colors… hahahaha!
