Your pubic hair is there for a reason! These 5 will convince you to leave it alone

Like every other part of the human body, your pubic hair has a pretty important role to play. So think twice before you shave or wax down there.

Brazilian, airstrip, bikini wax, shaving, hair removal creams… we have all waged wars on our pubic hair at some point or the other. Thanks to hairless swimsuit models and the hair removal industry, pubic hair removal has become our idea of clean and sexy. But just like every other part of the human body, even your pubic hair has a pretty important role to play.

So before you say goodbye to your bush again, here are certain things you should know about it:

1. Pubic hair is a sign of sexual maturity
It is only upon the onset of puberty that we start to develop pubic hair. This growth in youngsters indicates that they have now attained sexual maturity and their bodies are ready to procreate. In our conversation with obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Shivani Sabharwal from Apollo Spectra Hospital, she told us that: “Pubic hair has an array of biological benefits and takes care of your intimate parts. In fact, a lack of pubic hair on the onset of puberty could be indicative of underlying health issues.”

2. It protects your genitals
Your vagina is surrounded by skin that is way more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. And the pubic hair acts as a protection from bacterial and fungal infections and prevents the vagina from coming into direct contact with foreign particles. Dr Sabharwal equates pubic hair with eyelashes in the sense that both of them exist to protect sensitive organs from unwanted particles.

3. It provides warmth to your nether region
Pubic hair is also known to keep the genital area warm and moist, without which your skin would dry out and start chafing due to lack of sweat and moisture.

4. It diffuses pheromones
Pheromones are odours produced by the body that attracts sexual partners. While some people have a very strong scent, others have odours that are not quite as noticeable to others. The odour can be trapped by the pubic hair because of its density.

“Pubic hair plays a role in capturing and emitting pheromones from the genitals into the air and has a role to play in sexual attraction,” says Dr Sabharwal.

5. It reduces friction
Pubic hair is also there to ease friction between body parts during sexual intercourse, without which you can experience skin irritations. It also reduces friction between your vulva and clothing. The presence of pubic hair makes the skin down there less susceptible to chafing or rashes.

The idea of having pubic hair doesn’t seem all that bad now does it? Of course, to keep it or lose it is a completely personal choice, but at least now you can make an informed one.

“As long as you take good care of your intimate parts it’s okay to do whatever you want to your bush. So even when you get your pubic hair removed, with whatever method that you are most comfortable with, make sure you keep your intimate area clean,” concludes Dr Sabharwal.
