It might sound a little odd,  but vaginal weightlifting is a real thing. Although, it’s a very niche concept, which is gradually turning into a trend. And that’s because doing it regularly can boost your sex life!

Yeah, that’s true and even the doctor approves of it. Basically, vaginal weightlifting is an advanced version of kegel exercises that help to tighten your vaginal muscles, and all in all,  that helps you revive your sex life.

If you are an Insta freak, then you must have surely come across Kim Anami’s profile. She is a holistic sex and relationships expert who practices and teaches the art of vaginal weightlifting. You can say she is the one who has made this exercise a rage amongst youngsters.

But before you get all hooked on it, it’s better to know a few things about vaginal weightlifting.

Here’s an overview about vaginal weight lifting

We mean who would have thought you can actually lift weights using your vagina. We have always thought vaginas to be fragile and sensitive. But basically, in vaginal weightlifting it’s your pelvic floor muscle that does all the lifting.

According to Dr Sudeshna Ray, consultant obstetrics and gynecologist at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai, to understand the concept of vaginal weightlifting, you need to understand how kegel exercises work.

“Only people practicing kegel exercises should only go for this. Vaginal weightlifting is absolutely irrelevant if you don’t know or haven’t done kegel before. That’s because before exercising a muscle, you need to understand where you have to use the force, so that that particular muscle can respond to your action,” she says.

She adds, “In vaginal weightlifting, vaginal weight or jade eggs are inserted in the vagina. They start from 20 grams and go up to 100 grams and so. There are many other devices that are available online that are in the shape of a tampon. You can definitely start your vaginal weightlifting with these. After inserting any of them in your vagina, you can do your normal exercises. You can do squats or try walking. It’s like you have ankle weights on for more impact. This will exert pressure on your pelvic floor muscles and make them tighter,” Dr Ray explains.

Once you are pro, you can have those tampon-like insertions which come with strings, wherein you can tie some weight and move to an advanced level of vaginal weight lifting.

Can vaginal weightlifting helps in improving sex life?

Just like any other kegel exercise, vaginal weightlifting also helps to boost your sex life. According to Dr Ray, vaginal weightlifting makes the pelvic muscles tighter and sex becomes more enjoyable. In fact, it leads to better penetration.

“Vaginal weightlifting is great for the younger lot, but I won’t advise it for older adults. Also, we need to understand that this is not a treatment, they are just preventative measures,” she says.

She added:

Another benefit of doing vaginal weightlifting is that it can rectify urinary incontinence.

Here are some tips and risks related to vaginal weightlifting

The biggest risk is people don’t use the correct weights. Please remember that this is your vagina you are lifting with, so you have to be very cautious about the weight you are using. Take it slow and then graduate to another level.

“Infections are another problem. If you insert something in your vagina that is not clean enough then, there are high chances of you getting bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, etc. Also, just like we tend to forget the usual tampons in the vagina, at times, women have also reported to have forgotten this weighted tampon. This can lead to muscle strain and you can feel extreme pain around the area,” says Dr Ray.

Here are some tips to keep your vagina safe and sound:

1. Always wash your hands before inserting the weight in your vagina.
2. Wash the weight properly after use. Also, store them in a hygienic place.
3. Ensure that the string is out from your vagina to pull out the weight easily.
4. Insert the weight, just as you insert your tampon.
5. After inserting the weight, squeeze your pelvic muscles to hold it in.
6. Start with the lighter weight.

Now, you know all about vaginal weightlifting. So, do give it a try and tell us how the experience was.
