People’s attraction to monsoon sex may stem from the romantic ambience and cooling effects of rain. The sound and scent of rain can enhance intimacy. However, monsoon weather can also bring about potential issues. Humidity could lead to discomfort, and dampness might promote bacterial growth, causing vaginal infections. Itching, rashes, and irritation down there also rise in the rainy season. If you want to enjoy some cozy time with your partner and avoid sex problems in monsoon, addressing challenges like hygiene and comfort is important.

“While there might be no direct connection between monsoon season and an increase in sex problems, there are certain factors that can contribute to issues related to sexual health and intimacy,” Dr Sanjay Kumavat, Consultant Psychiatrist and Sexologist, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, tells Health Shots.

According to the expert, the high humidity and moisture in the air during this season can lead to discomfort and fungal infections, affecting one’s overall well-being and consequently, their libido. Moreover, mood swings due to gloomy weather might impact intimacy. In fact, staying indoors more often, limited physical activity, and disrupted routines can also influence sexual desire.”

How to avoid sex problems in monsoon?

To avoid such sex related problems in the rainy season, maintain proper hygiene, communication and a healthy lifestyle. Here are 5 ways to manage sex problems in monsoon:

1. Maintain personal hygiene

The increased level of humidity during monsoon can lead to the growth of fungi and bacteria, which can cause infections. Staying in wet clothes for a long time also add to issues of infection. Some individuals might also experience allergies during monsoon, leading to discomfort and reduced interest in sexual activities. Hence to avoid discomfort and potential infections, it is crucial to maintain good personal hygiene and ensure regular genital hygiene. Wear breathable clothes and change damp clothes promptly to prevent skin issues and infections.

2. Work on your libido

The damp and gloomy weather of the monsoon season affects energy levels and mood which can sometimes lead to a decrease in libido. Hormonal changes and reduced exposure to sunlight might contribute to this shift. To manage low libido, couples can explore various strategies. Engaging in regular physical activity, consuming a balanced diet rich in libido-boosting foods, and even trying new activities together can help reignite the spark in the relationship.

3. Guard against seasonal illnesses

The cases of viral illnesses, such as colds, flu, and waterborne diseases are on the rise during the monsoon season, which can lead to discomfort and impact sexual desire. Dr Kumavat suggests, “To avoid this, couples should take necessary precautions, including consuming a healthy diet rich in vitamins, staying hydrated, and maintaining proper sanitation practices. Additionally, practicing safe sex can help reduce the risk of transmitting infections.”

4. Spend quality time together

The romantic ambience of the monsoon season offers the perfect opportunity for couples to spend quality time together. Enjoying cosy indoor activities like cooking a meal together, watching movies, or reading books can strengthen the emotional bond between partners. Such activities can foster a sense of closeness, allowing couples to maintain intimacy even when the weather keeps them indoors. This will also help you both reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

5. Open communication

Effective communication is the cornerstone of any successful relationship, including the sexual aspect. During the monsoon season, it’s important for couples to openly discuss any concerns or issues they may be facing. Whether it’s a decrease in libido, discomfort due to weather-related reasons, or other challenges, discussing these matters can lead to understanding and finding solutions together. Being honest and empathetic while communicating can help partners navigate through any hurdles that may arise. Dr Kumavat says, “Open communication can strengthen your emotional bond and improve intimacy as well.”

It is essential to prioritize your comfort and well-being during any season. If you continue to experience difficulties, consider seeking advice from a medical professional in sexual health and relationships.
