Low libido or reduced sexual desire is a common concern affecting women across age groups. Stress, relationship problems, certain medications, hormonal imbalances, particularly during menopause, and underlying health conditions can all contribute to low libido. This can have an adverse impact on a couple’s sex life. While relationship experts may urge you to work on strengthening your emotional bond and intimacy, people also suggest supplements for sex drive. Is that the best solution? Let us find out!

What are the causes of low libido?

Low libido is often a combination of many factors. Here are some common contributors –

1. Physical factors

Hormonal imbalances: Changes in hormone levels such as low testosterone in men or imbalances in estrogen and progesterone in women, can affect libido, says gynaecologist Dr Madhu Juneja.

Medical conditions: Be it diabetes, a neurological disorder or a cardiovascular disease, a chronic illness can impact your sexual desire.

Medications: Some medications including certain antidepressants and contraceptives may have side effects that reduce libido.

2. Psychological factors

Stress: High levels of stress, whether related to work, finances or personal issues, can significantly impact sexual desire.

Anxiety and depression: Mental health conditions can affect various aspects of life, including libido, says the expert.

Relationship issues: Conflicts with your partner, communication problems or emotional distance in a relationship can contribute to low libido.

3. Lifestyle factors

Lack of sleep: Fatigue and sleep deprivation can diminish your sexual desire.

Poor diet and lack of exercise: A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits can impact overall well-being, including sexual health.

4. Age-related changes

Hormonal changes associated with ageing can affect libido, particularly during menopause in women. Bad habits such as too much of alcohol, smoking or drug use can also negatively impact your sexual function and desire.

Are supplements good for women’s sex drive?

Some see the use of supplements to boost female sex drive as the solution to the libido problem. Certain supplements may have a positive impact on women’s sex drive, but it is crucial to approach this cautiously and consult with a doctor before taking any supplements, says Dr Juneja.

Here are some supplements that are commonly associated with potential benefits for women’s sexual health:

1. Maca

It is believed to help balance hormones and improve sexual function. Maca may have a positive effect on sexual function in women in the menopause phase, as per a 2010 study published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

2. L-arginine

This amino acid is a precursor to nitric oxide, which plays a role in vasodilation and blood flow, potentially aiding in sexual function, says the expert.

3. Ginseng

Korean Red Ginseng, in particular, is known for its positive effects on sexual arousal. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that oral administration of Korean Red Ginseng extracts improved sexual arousal in menopausal women and may help to improve their sex life.

4. Tribulus terrestris

Used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine, this herb may help in improving sexual function in women.

5. Ginkgo biloba

Known for its memory-enhancing effects, ginkgo biloba may help in boosting libido, says the expert.

While supplements offer a potential avenue to enhance sexual desire in women, they should be approached with caution and professional guidance. Some supplements may interact with medications or have side effects, so it’s crucial to consult with a doctor before incorporating them into your routine.

Also, a holistic approach that includes lifestyle factors such as stress management, regular exercise and a healthy diet is also essential for promoting overall well-being and sexual health.
