Pee-gasms, also known as urine or pee orgasms, are a relatively new phenomenon. This sensation occurs when someone intentionally holds their urine for an extended period, resulting in a buildup of pressure in the bladder, which can lead to intense pleasurable sensations when they finally release their urine. While some people may find pee-gasms to be a pleasurable experience, there are potential risks and side effects associated with this practice, particularly when done regularly.
“When the bladder becomes overly full, the pressure can affect not only the organs but also the clitoris. The sudden release of this pressure can trigger the nerves in the bladder, leading to a peegasm,” says Dr Bhoopat Singh Bhati, Senior Consultant Urologist and Andrologist, Ruby Hall Clinic. When urine is held in the bladder, it builds up pressure and stretches the bladder walls. This pressure can stimulate the nerves in the bladder, including the ones that send signals to the brain for sexual arousal. When the person finally releases their urine, the release of pressure can cause a pleasurable sensation that some describe as an orgasm.
While peegasms may feel good in the moment, there are several reasons why this practice may not be the best for your urinary health:
One of the most significant risks is the potential for urinary tract infections (UTIs). When urine sits in the bladder for an extended period, it can provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to infections. Symptoms of a UTI can include pain or burning during urination, a frequent need to urinate, and lower abdominal pain.
Another potential side effect of pee-gasms is damage to the bladder muscles. When the bladder is regularly stretched to its limits, it can weaken the muscles that control urination. This can lead to various bladder problems.
Holding urine for too long can lead to kidney problems. “The kidneys filter waste and excess fluids from the blood and produce urine. When urine is held for too long, it can back up into the kidneys and cause damage over time,” says Dr Singh. This can lead to kidney infections, kidney stones, or even kidney failure in severe cases.
Regularly practising pee-gasms can lead to a conditioning effect, where the person’s body becomes accustomed to only experiencing sexual pleasure through this method. This can make it difficult or even impossible to experience sexual pleasure through other means, such as intercourse or masturbation.
Delaying urination can lead to ascending bacteria if it is not flushed out. “These bacteria can enter the sterile bladder, causing various kidney discomfort and dysfunction, as well as incontinence, which is a loss of bladder control,” says Dr Singh. As a result, incontinence can develop when the bladder muscle is overused to the point of no return over time.
If you experience any pain, discomfort, or unusual symptoms related to your urinary system, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions.
