Who doesn’t want to have a hot and heavy sesh in the bedroom with their partner? Most of us are always on the lookout for tips to enhance our libido, but what if we tell you that mindfulness could really help you. We see many raised eyebrows, but what we are saying is absolutely true.

Let’s tell you why it works, but before we get to that, it’s important to understand the link between meditation and sex.

How are mindfulness and sex related?

Yes, several studies show a link between mindfulness and improved sexual experiences. According to a study conducted in 2018, people who practice more mindfulness tend to have more sexual desire than those who don’t. There’s another 2019 study that found that those who practice mindfulness during sex tend to have more sexual satisfaction and improved self-esteem. And that’s not all — there’s another study that found that women who practice mindfulness during sex can get turned on more easily.

So, let’s try and figure how mindfulness improves your sex life. Here are some reasons:

1. It reduces stress

As we already know, mindfulness or being present in the moment is an effective tool to reduce stress. So, it comes as no surprise that it can increase sexual desire and performance by reducing cortisol as well as adrenaline levels. How many of us feel turned on when we are stressed? No one, right? Our lives are full of stress, because of pressures around work, relationships, and a host of other reasons. When your stress levels are high, it becomes difficult for you to orgasm.

That’s because stress and anxiety causes the constriction of blood vessels, and that’s really bad for you! All in all, mindfulness helps you move away from the fight or flight response, and takes you into relaxed territory.

2. It helps with deep rest, giving you more energy for sex

How many times have we missed out on sex, just because we had no energy in us? You’re not alone. According to a study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, the most common reason why couples do not have sex is because of exhausation. When you practice mindfulness and focus on one task at a time, they feel less fatigued and do not suffer from insomnia. This leaves you with more energy to focus on sex at night. Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?

3. It makes you more present and less distracted

Let’s break this to you: most of us have an overdeveloped left brain. What this essentially means is that our brain only reviews the past, and keeps visualising the future. It becomes difficult to break the cycle of past and future thoughts, and that’s where mindfulness really helps. Now that means if you focus on the present moment, you will be able to orgasm better.

4. It can help you read your partner better

This might sound absolutely crazy, but did you know that practicing mindfulness can make your partner think you’re psychic. This is because mirror neurons are said to be intuitive, which means that just watching someone else being pleasured can create pleasure in your brain. So, if your partner is turned on, it is most likely that the feeling will get passed on to you or vice-versa.

5. It helps you not to be overly dependent on your partner to complete you

Most of us have grown up on an appetite of films that promise that your partner is the one who completes you. Well, the truth is it’s only YOU who can complete yourself. No kind of job, degree or partner can do that for you. When you practice mindfulness, you try to look within to find happiness and peace. In case you are dependent on your partner to provide you happiness spiritually or physically, then you won’t be happy ever.
