We have shared a lot of gyaan with you on what you should do to take care of your sexual health. However, there are definitely a few things you need to avoid to ensure that you can enjoy sex without putting yourself at the risk of health issues.

There are some common mistakes most people make right after sex which might increase the risk of infections. But, you want to remember your sex session for all the fun, right? For that, you will have to avoid certain things that can lead to discomfort and pain.

You need to ensure that you avoid these six common mistakes post sex:

1. Don’t wear tight clothes and sleep
Your body warms up after sex and you tend to sweat. If you wear nylon or synthetic lingerie, it might create abrasions. What’s more, those nylon undies might lead to itchiness after getting in contact with vaginal secretions.

Wear cotton nightwear to stay healthy.

2. Don’t wash your vagina with an intimate wash
According to Dr Uma Vaidyanathan, a senior consultant at obstetrics and gynaecology department, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, you must clean your vagina with warm water after sex. However, you should avoid using harsh intimate washes because the skin becomes very sensitive after sex. She also suggests that one should avoid douching under all circumstances but especially after sex.

3. Don’t use intimate wipes
“Most intimate wipes are laden with artificial fragrances and preservatives. Using them might increase the risk of infections and rashes”, says D. Pratima Thamke, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Pune.

4. Always clean your sex toys
Sex toys are exposed to semen and/or vaginal discharge, making them prone to the accumulation of bacteria. This means that they can lead to infection if not cleaned after sex.

5. Wash your hands
You have touched the genitals of your partner. Therefore, it is important to clean your hands to stop the spread of bacteria. Not doing so can lead to multiple bacterial infections.

6. Avoid a hot bubble bath
Cuddling in a hot water bath might sound like an excellent plan after sex but it might increase your chances of getting an infection. A hot water bath can provide the bacteria with a conducive temperature to multiply.

Being in that space filled with hot water for a prolonged period of time will also mean that the bacteria have prolonged access to different parts of your body. This will not only be harmful to your genital health but also your partner’s.

So, use this post-sex cleanup guide to stay safe!
