Talking about female sexuality may still be frowned upon, let alone discussing the intricacies of orgasm and female ejaculation. If you’re scratching your head and wondering whether women can actually ejaculate, this one’s for you!

While these phenomena have been subject to a lot of curiosity and discussion, lack of knowledge on these subjects has made people believe in myths and misconceptions. Health Shots asked sexologist Dr Chirag Bhandari, Founder of Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health (IASH) about female ejaculation and here’s what he has to say!

What is female ejaculation?

Female ejaculation is also commonly known as “squirting” or “gushing”. It is a topic that has garnered significant curiosity and interest over the years. While it remains somewhat controversial, many experts and researchers have confirmed its existence. Female ejaculation refers to the release of fluid from the female prostate or Skene’s glands during sexual arousal or orgasm.

Female ejaculation has often been misunderstood and even dismissed due to societal taboos and limited scientific research. However, recent studies have shed light on its nature and the experiences of women who have reported ejaculating. The fluid released during female ejaculation is distinct from urine and has been found to contain prostatic-specific antigen (PSA), which is also present in male semen. This suggests that female ejaculation involves the secretion of fluid from Skene’s glands, similar to the male prostate, explains Dr Bhandari.

The quantity and characteristics of the fluid can vary from woman to woman. Some may experience a small amount of fluid, while others may produce larger amounts.

Is female ejaculation same as female orgasm?

It is important to note that this phenomenon is not synonymous with female orgasm, as women can experience orgasm without ejaculation and vice versa. Experiencing female ejaculation can be pleasurable for some women, while others may not find it particularly significant or may not experience it at all, he adds.

Female ejaculation is not abnormal

Not only is it important to understand female ejaculation to debunk the myths surrounding female sexuality, but to approach the topic with open-mindedness and accurate information. Dr Bhandari calls it a a normal and natural phenomenon that occurs during sexual activity. This is why it should be regarded with acceptance and respect.

The experience may vary from one woman to another. Some women never experience it, while others may experience it frequently or sporadically. It is important to note that not all women ejaculate, and it should not be considered a measure of sexual satisfaction or pleasure. The absence of ejaculation does not imply any inadequacy or abnormality.

Further research is necessary to explore the mechanisms and functions of female ejaculation fully. By embracing the diversity of women’s sexual experiences and expanding our knowledge on this topic, we can promote a more inclusive and informed understanding of female sexuality. Open conversations, education and destigmatization can help create a supportive environment where women can feel comfortable discussing and exploring their own bodies and sexual experiences, including the possibility of ejaculation, concludes the expert.
