Why do have we sex? The obvious reply would be to reproduce. In that case, what’s your take on orgasms? Do you also think that your big “O” is just about pleasure? Well, if that’s the case, then let us tell you that the benefits of orgasms are crazy. From boosting your mood to beauty benefits – orgasms can literally cover them all.
If you talk about an orgasm, it can be defined as a feeling of immense pleasure and excitement. It is a type of involuntary action that is controlled by the nervous system. It releases a discharge of accumulated erotic tension, giving a relaxing sensation in return.
But this is just a drop in the ocean, because according to Dr Aruna Kalra, senior gynaecologist and obstetrician from CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram there is more to it.
Orgasms may help you feel closer to your partner, helping to build a strong bond with him/her. What’s more, they increase the release of oxytocin that enhances the feeling of bonding and love. Apart from that, maintaining a good sexual life helps you maintain a healthy bond with your partner.
Orgasms help in relieving pain, even when you cramp during the menstrual cycle. This happens due to the release of endorphins and corticosteroids.
Due to the release of oxytocin (the hormone that increases the feeling of pleasure) and the decrease in cortisol (the hormone which increases stress), you are likely to experience less stress and more happiness. Orgasms also offer skin benefits, which may make you happier.
A hormone called prolactin is released post-orgasm, plus the impact of oxytocin and vasopressin help you sleep better. This is the reason why you feel quite relaxed after an orgasm.
“Regular orgasms can prove to be beneficial for your menstrual cycle. When you orgasm, many nutrients and blood rush towards the vagina, ensuring a healthy menstrual cycle,” suggests Dr Kalra.
Some studies reveal that orgasms increase your likelihood to conceive and also help you have a healthy pregnancy. The reason behind this is the release of oxytocin.
Research has shown that orgasms may improve the immune system of a person. Orgasming every week can help in boosting your body’s antibodies.
But do you know why we orgasm? Here’s what Dr Kalra has to say – “Intense sexual stimulation causes orgasms. It can also be achieved during a sexual activity, ranging from sexual intercourse to even an act of foreplay. Orgasms often occur following a sense of arousal of erogenous areas like nipples, genitals, anus, and perineum.”
So ladies, do not underestimate the power of an orgasm.
