Menstrual cups are a popular alternative to sanitary pads as they are environmentally friendly and safe to use. While they are easy to handle and insert, it is important to be aware of some of the potential issues that may arise with menstrual cups, such as leakage. Many people face menstrual cup leakage but you can fix it easily. Here are some of the common reasons why your menstrual cup is leaking and some easy and quick fix solutions in case you are facing menstrual cup leakage.

What is a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a menstrual hygiene device that is small and bell-shaped, that is placed in the vagina during menstruation. It is a reusable alternative to traditional disposable menstrual products such as pads and tampons. A menstrual cup is folded and inserted into the vagina, where it unfolds and creates a seal against the vaginal walls to prevent leaks. They are worn for several hours. It is environmentally friendly as they are reusable for several years, reducing the waste generated by disposable menstrual products. They are also cost-effective because they last you a long time.

While it is easy to use, it is vital to understand the usage, especially if someone is new to it. Knowing how to use it will reduce the chances of leakage and discomfort.

What are the common reasons for menstrual cup leakage?

Here are some of the common reasons for menstrual cup leakage, as explained by obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Bratati Bhattacharya.

1. Incorrect insertion

If the cup is not placed correctly, it may not form a suitable seal, resulting in leakage. If the cup does not fully expand inside the vagina, gaps can form, which can also result in leaks. The cup must be completely open inside your vagina to ensure a secure seal.

2. Size

The second most vital problem is the size. Menstrual cups come in different sizes based on factors such as age, childbirth history, and flow intensity. Using a cup that is too small may not provide adequate coverage, while a cup that is too large may not seal properly.

3. Old menstrual cup

While menstrual cups are meant to last a long time, leakage may occur if the cup is too old or frequently used in rare cases. If you are using an old menstrual cup, you might want to change it immediately as it can be another reason for leakage.

4. Fitting

If you push it too high or push it too low, there are chances of leakage. The cup should be properly fitted, and should not be tight or very loose. So, be mindful of the fitting when you are using a menstrual cup.

5. Cup material or firmness

Different cup materials and hard materials used to make these may not be suitable for everyone. Some women may discover that specific cup material or hardness level may contribute to leakage.

6. Heavy flow

If you have a heavy menstrual flow, using a cup with a smaller capacity may result in overflow and leakage. Therefore, it is vital to understand the need and use a menstrual cup as per the requirement.

How to fix a menstrual cup?

Although menstrual cups are designed to form a perfect, spill-free seal. However, here are some prevention tips to keep in mind to prevent leakage.

1. Look for the correct menstrual cup size

Women often experience menstrual cup leaks due to purchasing a small or incorrectly sized cup. It is advised that you search for a larger cup size if you are over 30 or have children. Also, people with a shorter cervix length should opt for a small-sized cup and a medium/large-sized cup would be good for women who have heavy period flow.

2. Insert the cup properly

A menstrual cup should be folded into a ‘C’ or ‘U’ shape so that it allows for easy insertion into the vagina. However, make sure it opens after it is inside. If not, it may shift and result in a leak. One way to ensure proper placement is to perform a “walk test.” Simply walk and check if it’s moving. If you are still uncomfortable, sit on the pot again, open your legs wide open, remove the cup, and insert it again.

3. Wipe residual blood in the vaginal opening

Remaining menstrual blood inside and around the vaginal opening may result in leakage. After inserting your menstrual cup, gently clean any residue from the inside of your vaginal hole by wiping it with a toilet paper.

4. Empty the cup after 6-8 hours

A menstrual cup offers up to eight hours of leak-free protection. You must not exceed this time limit and prevent it from overflowing.

How to keep the menstrual cup clean and hygienic?

After completion of each menstruation, the cup should be sterilised with warm water and mild soap. The cups have come with medicated silicone material or good quality rubber material. So, it is advisable to avoid using any harsh soap or any strong steriliser.
