And those five days are back again! Sigh…
You might have the same agonizing thought when your periods visit you. But the biggest question that hovers inside our heads is why the initial two to three days of our period are more uncomfortable and painful than the rest. If you also want to know why, then listen to what Dr Swati Gaikwad, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Pune has to say.
Why are the initial days of your periods so painful?
According to Dr Gaikwad, extremely painful periods are called dysmenorrhea. This is the primary reason for the extreme pain during menstruation around the abdomen region.
“Every woman experiences pain due to uterine cramping. Basically, the releases the hormone prostaglandin is released during menstruation to kickstart the process of uterine muscular contraction. Contractions happen at an immense rate and your body expels clots from the uterus during this time,” she explains.
However, if the pain is unbearable then major issues like fibroids and endometriosis could be to blame.
What can you do to be free of this pain?
According to Dr Gaikwad, you can take OTC painkillers to deal with the pain. But if they also can’t offer much relief, then it’s time to visit a gynaecologist.
Also, listen:
“You also need to make some dietary changes to feel some quick relief during period pain. You should avoid caffeine, do some breathing exercises, and use hot water bags as quick fixes,” she recommends.
Unfortunately, your periods and the subsequent pain aren’t going anywhere, but at least now you know why it hurts so bad.
