A missed period can be like all your fears come true and give you a minor anxiety attack! But is it really a thing to worry about or do you need to calm your overthinking brain? Women have a love-hate relationship with their periods! Every time Aunt Flo is about to knock at our doors, we end up feeling miserable. And God forbid, if she arrives late, then our brain goes into a tizzy.

A delayed period or missed period is not a concern if it happens once in a while. But if you find yourself wondering when it’s about to happen almost every single time, then ladies, it’s time to give your gynaecologist a visit.

Dr. Bhumika Bansal, Gynecologist and Obstetrician, often shares videos of intimate and sexual health problems that women are prone to, on social media.

Sharing another informative video on missed periods, Dr Bansal writes, “Every woman is different, including their periods. Some happen like clockwork. Others are hit or miss and unpredictable. On average, a woman gets their period every 24 to 38 days. A period usually lasts about 2 to 8 days.”

So, the big question comes to your mind is if your period is really irregular? And if so, does it need treatment?

According to Dr Bansal, there are specific signs of an irregular period.

You may have irregular periods if:

  1. The time between each period starts to change.
  2. You lose more or less blood during a period than usual.
  3. The number of days that your period lasts varies a lot.

If your periods are irregular or you may have missed them, something could be terribly wrong with your hormones. They could also be triggered by a change in the contraception method or a sign of menopause. Well, many things can cause irregular periods. Changes in your body’s level of the hormones — estrogen and progesterone can disrupt the normal pattern of your period. That’s why young girls going through puberty and women approaching menopause commonly have irregular periods. So, it is imperative to understand what causes your missed periods in the first place.

Causes of irregular periods can be:

  1. Having an intrauterine device (IUD)
  2. Changing birth control pills or using certain medications
  3. Too much exercise
  4. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  5. Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  6. Stress
  7. Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  8. Thickening of or polyps on the uterine lining
  9. Uterine fibroids
