You must have heard about gummies for skin, hair, and digestion, but have you heard about vaginal gummies. That’s right, they exist! Earlier in 2023, international reality TV stars Kourtney Kardashian brought these vaginal gummies to attention as a ‘sweet treat for the vagina’! While she launched her own line of vagina health gummies, they made us wonder what it was and how it can help women sort out their vaginal health problems. If you have been wondering about vaginal health gummies, scroll down to know more.

Health Shots reached out to Dr Rashmi Balyan, Senior Consultant (Gynecology and Obstetrics) at Primus Super Specialty Hospital, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, to know about this new product.

Benefits of vaginal gummies for vaginal health

Urinary tract infection is a common infection that can affect any part of the urinary system, including the uterus, bladder, kidneys, and urethra. The expert highlights that vaginal gummies may help strengthen vaginal health in many ways. Gummy for uterine tract infection may increase freshness and reduce the chances of getting an infection. It does so by changing the smell and pH level of the vagina. Certain vaginal gummies contain probiotics and vitamin C, which may affect the pH value of the vagina and urinary tract. However, there is more research required to prove the positive effects of gummies on vaginal health.

What vaginal gummies can’t do for your health?

1. Does not help get rid of vaginal odour

Consuming gummies for vaginal health can affect the natural pH of the vagina and urinary tract, but it does not help get rid of vaginal odour. Dr Balyan says that vaginal odor is natural, and should not smell like flowers and fruits.

2. Not good for treating vaginitis

Vaginitis is the inflammation of the vagina that occurs when the vaginal pH is too high. High pH means the vagina is not acidic enough to prevent bacteria from growing. Vaginitis causes a fishy smell. Even if these gummies claim to treat such infections, Dr Balyan says that they cannot treat vaginitis. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common type of vaginitis. This happens due to the excessive growth of bacteria, normally present in the vagina. Any ingredient that changes the vaginal environment also has the potential to disrupt the balance of a healthy vagina. Changing this balance can lead to problems and even infections.

Women tend to take vaginal gummies as an oral dietary supplement in most of these infections. However, using gummies for vaginal health without the advice of a gynaecologist can increase many health risks.

What are vaginal gummies made of?

Most of these gummies are made of gelatin or agar agar, which is a plant-based gelatin derived from seaweed. Agar Agar is a product obtained from algae. It is mainly prepared from Gracilaria, Gelidium, and Eucheuma algae. While it is commonly used in many healthy dishes, there are some studies that warn people of its side effects. Some research suggests that it may protect against certain cancers like colon cancer, others suggest that they increase the chance of colon tumours. Some gummies also contain bones of animals and hooves.

If you have been having vaginal problems like foul-smelling vaginal discharge, itching, burning, or heavy blood flow, it is better to consult a doctor. Do not take vaginal gummies because it has been advertised, seek professional advise first to avoid complications.
