Rice water, a renowned natural remedy in Korea for skin and hair care, has gained popularity in India as well for its instant and effective results. Also known as Tandulodaka in Ayurveda, this natural elixir is enriched with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, proving beneficial for skin and hair. Beyond its beauty benefits, Ayurveda acknowledges rice water as a potent treatment for urinary tract infections (UTIs). This ancient remedy extends its therapeutic benefits to alleviate discomforts such as burning sensations, white discharge, and heavy menstrual bleeding. So, let’s find out how to use rice water for UTIs.

What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection affecting any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra. Common symptoms include a persistent urge to urinate, a burning sensation during urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic discomfort. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, adult women are 30 times more likely than men to develop a UTI. Hence, UTI is more prevalent in women. Medical intervention is crucial to completely get rid of the infection, however keeping yourself hydrated and maintaining proper hygiene may help prevent the infection.

Another study published in the Indian Journal of Microbiology Research showed that the overall prevalence of UTI was 33.54 percent, of which 66.78 percent were females and 33.22 percent were males. In their lives, 50–60 percent of women will have at least one UTI and one in every three will have at least one symptomatic UTI that requires treatment by the age of 24.

Is rice water good for a UTI?

The benefits of rice water are not limited to beauty, they might also keep your vaginal infections at bay. “Women with cases of UTI may experience symptoms like discomfort, burning, and itching associated with this infection. In such a case, you can try some Ayurvedic home remedies that may help you get rid of the infection,” Dr Chanchal Sharma, an Ayurveda expert told Health Shots.

She added, “In Ayurveda, a particular drink, rice water, has long been used for treating UTI. This drink’s benefits include not just healing the infection but also lowering acidity, heavy flow, and period cramps.”

What are the benefits of rice water for UTI?

In Ayurveda, rice water, or Tandulodaka, is believed to be beneficial for treating UTIs due to its soothing properties. It contains compounds that may help alleviate inflammation and irritation in the urinary tract. The starch in rice water could create a protective coating, potentially reducing discomfort during urination. Dr Sharma said, “It helps increase blood flow in the body and decrease pitta because excessive pitta may produce heat and cause a burning sensation. It also helps balance vata and kapha which helps curb digestive issues and relieve burning symptoms during a UTI. Additionally, Tabdulodaka is considered to have mild diuretic effects, promoting increased urine production and potentially flushing out bacteria from the urinary system.”

However, while traditional remedies like Tandulodaka may offer relief for mild symptoms, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional for the proper diagnosis and treatment of UTIs. Your doctor may prescribe you medicine such as antibiotics, which are often necessary to address the underlying bacterial infection effectively.
