Any discussion about our reproductive organs is still quite a taboo in the Indian society. No wonder then that we’ve not really been told a lot about the workings of our vagina apart from some basic stuff; and most of the things we have heard might just be based on misinformation.

Well, you might know the basics such as its self-cleansing mechanism, the importance of maintaining a pH balance, and the protective role of the pubic hair. But, we bet you didn’t know about the following facts about your vajayjay:

Fact #1: Your vagina isn’t a black hole
If you fear that you’ll lose your tampons in there, you can take some comfort in the fact that it is impossible for a tampon to get lost in your vagina.

But, be careful while using a tampon as it is possible to get it stuck. In such a situation, see your doctor immediately to get it removed.

Fact #2: A vaginal workout can keep your lady bits healthy
Pelvic floor exercises such as the kegel exercises can help in strengthening the pelvic floor muscles which will, in turn, help with providing support to the bladder, uterus, rectum, and small intestine. This also helps you manage urinary incontinence.

Fact #3: Your diet can affect the scent down there
Every woman has a distinct smell down there because of the bacteria that maintain healthy pH levels and it is completely normal. However, what you eat can also alter the scent.

Garlic, onion, and fish are strong-smelling foods and can lead to a distinct odour. On the contrary, it is believed that eating foods like pineapple can give your vagina a sweet smell.

Fact #4: G-spot is not everything
G-spot is the ultimate mystery spot which is considered sensitive to sexual stimulation and can make you reach the big O. Scientists from a study published in the journal Sexual and Marital Therapy have recently discovered ‘A-spot’ also called the anterior fornix erogenous zone. It is believed that stimulating this spot for 10 to 15 minutes can give you an instant orgasm.

The clitoris is considered to have 8,000 touch-sensitive nerve endings which help the majority of the women to reach orgasm.

Fact #5: Your vagina can change its size
When you are not aroused, the vaginal canal is actually quite short, measuring up to 3 to 4 inches. But, when you are aroused, it has the capability to expand by 200 per cent to nearly 6 or 7 inches.

This happens because, during arousal, the upper portion of the vagina elongates and pushes the cervix as well as the uterus slightly deeper to facilitate penetration.

Fact #6: You can get wet even when you’re not sexually aroused
The notion that wet vagina means the person wants sex is widely misunderstood. Vaginas can get wet for a bunch of other reasons as well. Your vulva has sweat glands which can also make it wet. By the way, your pee can also make it wet.

Your vagina can start lubricating automatically when touched even if you are not aroused. Scientist uses the term arousal non-concordance which is a condition where your physical arousal and mental arousal is not aligned. Your vaginal lubrication is not a signal of consent.

Fact #7: Your vagina can also wrinkle with age
As you grow old, the appearance of your vajayjay will also change. Whether because of the low levels of estrogen or less collagen, your vagina may appear saggier. While it may sound weird, it is actually normal.
