Getting your clit pierced might sound a little scary but you’ll be shocked to know that many women are getting it done. Vaginal piercing doesn’t just have an aesthetic appeal. There are a lot of women who think that this might also boost their orgasm. But just FYI, all this is one big myth.

There are various types of genital piercing women opt for like labia piercing, clit piercing, anal and vaginal piercing. When we asked Dr Deepti Kurmi, who is a gynecologist at Apollo Clinic, Pune, about the trend.

She clearly stated that no gynaecologist or doctor will ever advise a woman to get her genitals pierced as it comes with both short-term and long-term consequences.

“The immediate effects are pain, excessive bleeding, rash, and fever. The bigger problem is that if you get it done from an untrained person and something goes wrong, a surgery will be the only way out. That’s not going to be easy either”, she said.

Here are the seven most profound effects that vaginal piercings can have:

1. Risk of UTI
There is a lot of touching required when you’re getting your vaginal area pierced. If the equipment, hands or anything that’s touching your lady part is not sanitized properly, there are chances of you catching a urinary tract infection.

“The thing is that it can turn into a recurring infection which can cause immense pressure on your kidneys. In the worst case scenario, it can lead to renal failure as well” she explained.

2. Nerve damage
“Nerves down there are responsible for the sensation while you are having sex, or otherwise. Damaging them can numb that area and you stand to lose the sensation, completely or partially”, she said.

3. Painful genitals
Yes, sex can get painful as well. “During intercourse, there is a lot of friction that is involved in the vaginal area. Due to this, a lot of pain is caused. If the situation is way too rough, women might also experience bleeding and rupturing of their clit hood”, she explained.

4. Allergic reaction
“Women mostly wear copper and nickel-based jewellery. The skin is way too sensitive down there and that’s why, in most of the cases, the chances of getting contact dermatitis are really very high”, she explained.

5. Scarring at the site of the piercing
It might not be a bigger problem when you get it done but scarring develops over time. In most of the women, the scar tissue gets developed in the area due to which they have difficulty in passing urine. In the long run, it might also become hard and painful at the time of delivery.

6. Risk of STI
“Hepatitis B, C, and even HIV are on the list when it comes to the risk of having an STI. All these are long-term implications of getting your genitals pierced. If your wound has not healed properly, it acts as a window for all kinds of viruses and bacteria that can literally ruin your health”, she explained.

7. Fistula damage
“There are three separations for the excretion of urine, period blood, and poop. This passage or channel is called a fistula. When vaginal piercing go wrong, there are chances of increased interaction between these passages which can cause problems. It can lead to multiple infections which can be cured only through surgery that is risky”, she said.

“Apart from all the above, there are psychological implications as well. Women regret getting their genitals pierced and the excruciating pain becomes traumatizing for them. Many also go through post-traumatic syndrome. That’s why you should be really cautious before getting it done”, she concluded.

So, ladies, think twice before you make up your mind about a vaginal piercing.
