You probably already know that your vagina is one of the most sensitive parts of the body. Even a minor abrasion can cause problems like redness and itching. But, if you notice vaginal swelling, then it is definitely time to sit up and take notice because it doesn’t happen normally.

Curious to know what exactly transpired for your vaginal lips to get swollen? Well, we got a gynaecologist to reveal all the reasons behind this trouble.

Here are 6 reasons why you’re experiencing vaginal swelling
Our lady parts are not just sensitive but also extremely prone to infections which makes it the most common cause of a swollen vagina. According to Dr. Milloni Gadoya from Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai, fungal and bacterial infections are common and cause major inflammation in the vagina due to which we experience swelling.

But apart from this, there are six other reasons that you might want to know about:

1. Bartholin’s cyst
This one is also known as an abscess. According to Dr. Gadoya, this gland called Bartholin’s gland is responsible for the secretion of fluids during sex. When you’re suffering from Bartholin’s cyst, it gets blocked due to the creation of a cyst which causes the vagina to get swollen.

She says:

You feel immense pain while walking when you have this problem.

2. Allergies
Allergies can be due to many reasons like using unhygienic razors, epilating creams, synthetic panties, etc. Did you know that if your skin is allergic to a certain kind of detergent, you can get allergies and have a swollen vagina? Therefore, it is very important to take care of your personal hygiene.

3. Using scented soaps and sprays
“Many young women use fragrant sprays and soaps to make their vaginas smell ‘fresh’ but this is not healthy for your vagina. There are multiple preservatives present in these soaps and sprays that can affect the biome of your vagina, leading to swelling”, she suggests.

4. Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the blood supply increases in the genital area because of hormonal changes due to which women experience swelling down there.

5. Varicose vein and High BP
“Veins are everywhere and the vaginal area is no different. So, yes, you can develop varicose veins down there are as well because of which swelling can persist. Another thing that can give you vaginal distress is high blood pressure”, says Dr. Gadoya.

6. Rough sex
“Being aggressive while sex can lead to abrasions which can further lead to swelling. Also, some women are allergic to the latex of the condom and lubricants which can also be the reason for a swollen vagina”, she explained.

“A swollen vagina or a lump is not normal. If you are also experiencing pain, redness, and itching along with white discharge, you must visit a doctor since ignoring the problem can lead to major consequences”, she concluded.

Being aware is the only key to avoiding this situation. So, be vigilant about your vagina and follow proper hygiene techniques.
