If you’ve been experiencing a burning sensation when urinating, then you must know that your situation has a medical name called dysuria. Due to this disorder, you experience a stinging pain while urinating. This brings a lot of discomfort, no doubt. However, in severe cases, it can affect your kidney and reproductive health as well.

Therefore, it is very important to take care of this problem before it evolves into a severe matter. You need to pay heed to these five major things that might be causing that burning sensation when urinating:

1. You might have a UTI
Bacterial, fungal, or viral, UTI can be of any nature but it will almost always cause a burning sensation when you pee. “Painful peeing can also be due to inflammation of the urinary tract. The urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys make up your urinary tract. The ureters are tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Inflammation in any of these organs can cause pain during urination”, says Dr Siddharth Kumar, M.Ch (Urology and Renal Transplant), Regency Superspecialty Hospital, Lucknow.

He added, “Women are more likely to develop urinary tract infections than men. This is because the urethra is shorter in women than it is in men. A shorter urethra means that bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to reach the bladder.”

2. Holding your urine for too long
Not peeing for really long can increase the toxicity of the pee and when you finally empty your bladder, there are chances that you end up feeling the heat down there. Holding your pee means accumulating toxic acids in your bladder. This acid stays in contact with your bladder lining causing rashes and pain. When you pee, it tends to rub against the injured bladder walls and make your vagina and urethra hurt.

3. Your pH balance might be in a limbo
If you are douching and using vaginal washes on a regular basis, there are high chances that your pH level is disrupted which will ultimately lead to that burning sensation.

“You need to be very selective while choosing your vaginal washes and bathing soaps. Sometimes, painful urination can also be due to products that you use for the genital region. Soaps, lotions, and bubble baths can irritate vaginal tissues. Dyes in laundry detergents and other products can also cause irritation, leading to painful urination”, explained Dr Kumar.

4. You are dehydrated
Urine is our body’s natural mechanism of flushing out toxins from your body. When you drink water, these toxins get absorbed in it and eventually exit out from your body. The more water you drink, the less concentrated your urine is. But, if you drink less than 7 to 8 glasses, which is a prescribed limit, your pee becomes more acidic. Hence, it hurts when it is released.

5. Check if you have an STI
You need to keep a check on your partner’s sexual health to avoid any sexual infection because it can also be responsible for the burning sensation when you pee. “You may also experience pain when urinating if you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Some STIs that may cause painful urination include genital herpes, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia. It’s important to be screened for these infections, especially because they don’t always have symptoms”, says Dr Kumar.
