If you are experiencing a persistently itchy vagina, bumps, irregular periods or a weird smell down there, then it’s important to keep a close eye on these symptoms because it could mean your vagina might be giving you clues to some potential health issues.

We all know what a healthy vagina looks and feels, but if you notice any new changes, then you should look out—because your vagina could be giving you signals that something’s seriously wrong.

1. Lumps and bumps
Lumps and bumps down there can be because of several reasons, one of them being blocked glands caused by a buildup of fluids. These blockages or cysts usually go away on their own. However, if it doesn’t and you notice that it continues to grow, then see your doctor immediately.

If the lumps feel like a pimple or rash, then it could be because of hair removal processes such as shaving and waxing which can clog or infect the hair follicles. The rashes could either be because of the tight and sweaty jeans or leggings you were wearing or because of new laundry detergent as well.

2. A prominent change in vaginal discharge
It is very difficult to define ‘the normal’ amount, consistency and colour of the vaginal discharge because it varies from woman to woman. It can be off-white and thick to clear in colour with a watery consistency. The discharge also changes depending on your cycle.

Also, watch:

But, if you notice any prominent change in the colour or amount of the consistency, then it could be a sign of hormonal changes, infection or pregnancy. If it persists for more than a day or two, you must check in with your doctor to understand the exact reason.

3. A distinct odour coming from down there
Your vaginal smell depends upon various factors. Depending upon your choice of cloth material to the amount you sweat, your vaginal smell can be either mild, pungent or anywhere in between. One thing you must ensure is that your lady bits should never smell like a rotten egg or something foul.

Wearing a sanitary pad or tampon for too long can cause bacteria buildup which can also result in a funky smell. So, don’t forget to change your pad or tampon every four to 6 hours. An unpleasant scent could also be because of bacterial vaginosis and STIs. If the odour doesn’t go away after changing your hygiene regime or diet, consider consulting a doctor.

4. A constantly itching vagina
Occasional itching because of sweat or some other reason is completely normal, but if the itching is constant and you feel like itching your vagina or vulva, it is something to be alarmed about. The itching signals that there’s something wrong and you must intervene.

Itching can be because of allergic reactions triggered by body wash or soap, or it can be because of conditions like bacterial vaginosis, a yeast infection or an STI. Try changing your personal hygiene products but if it doesn’t get better, see your doctor in order to find out the exact reason and treat it accordingly.

So, ladies, your vagina can say a lot as long as you listen to it.
