Wearing regular panties under a bodycon dress or jeans is a big no-no. You see, this kind of combination comes with the embarrassment of visible panty lines. During such situations, thong panties are saviours. In fact, many women would go as far as saying they’re essential but are they safe to wear?

It is believed that wearing a thong underwear can cause irritation, infection, itchiness, rashes and ingrown hair. You’re the one who will make the ultimate decision about the undergarments you wear but you should know that wearing thongs regularly can impact your vaginal health.

Here are four ways in which wearing thongs can impact your vaginal health:

1. Thong panties can alter the pH of your vagina

Most thongs are not made of cotton, using alternate materials like synthetic and lace. These materials make it difficult for the skin down there to breathe. Non-breathable fabric causes extra moisture which can lead to an increase in the growth of bacteria and further change the pH balance of your vulva and vagina.

2. You might notice a change in odour

A particular type of odour is common and completely normal but if the odour has changed to something more pungent, it is time to look at the underlying causes. Since the fabric of the thong is usually not breathable, the excess moisture increases the chance of vaginal odour due to bacterial overgrowth or a yeast infection.

3. Thong panties can increase itchiness

The fabric, the string and basically the very design of thongs can lead to itchiness and irritation. Lace and other synthetic materials are harsh on your skin to begin with, but the string that is directly in touch with your privates causes friction which can result in inflammation and itchiness.

4. They can relocate bacteria

The thin and stringy pattern of the thongs can shift the bacteria from your bums to your vagina and vice-versa. Make sure that you are wearing the right fit or not wearing thongs at all. This will cut down the risk of bacterial infection.
