Skin inflammation is among some of the common skin concerns. Inflammation on the skin is a localised response by the body’s immune system to protect against harmful stimuli, such as injury, infection, or irritants. Some of the symptoms of skin inflammation include redness, swelling, warmth, and pain in the affected area. Inflammatory skin conditions can range from mild, temporary reactions like sunburn or insect bites, to chronic conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis. It can be triggered by various factors, including immune reactions, allergic responses, microbial infections, or physical irritation.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram, to understand how to deal with skin inflammation.

1. Identify and avoid triggers

“If you get to know your triggers inflammation on your skin, try to refrain or minimise exposure to those triggers. Common triggers include certain skincare products, allergens, harsh chemicals, and environmental factors such as heat or cold,” suggests the expert.

2. Practice gentle skincare

Use gentle skincare products that are specifically formulated for sensitive or inflamed skin. Avoid using harsh soaps, exfoliants, or scrubs that can further irritate the skin. Choose fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products whenever possible.

3. Keep the skin moisturized

Dry skin can exacerbate inflammation, so it’s important to keep your skin moisturized. Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type to help soothe and protect the skin barrier.

4. Avoid scratching or rubbing the skin

As per the expert, “Any form of scratching or rubbing action on the inflamed skin can further worsen your plight causing more inflammation. Try to avoid scratching or rubbing the affected area, and instead, gently pat or tap the skin if necessary”.

5. Apply cold compress

Cold compress can help reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. You can use a clean cloth soaked in cold water or a cold chamomile tea bag, and gently apply it to the affected area for a few minutes to get rid of the inflammation.

7. Keep a healthy lifestyle

The expert tells that eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can all contribute to maintaining healthy skin. A healthy lifestyle can help support the immune system and reduce inflammation.

8. Seek professional medical advice

If your skin inflammation persists or worsens despite your efforts, it’s important to seek professional medical advice from a dermatologist or healthcare provider. They can diagnose the underlying cause of the inflammation and provide appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific condition.

Always remember that no one method fits all, and these tips are general and may not be suitable for everyone. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist for personalised advice and treatment options based on your individual needs and condition.
