Nosebleeds is a fairly common problem often observed in kids below the age of 10 years. Even though they are generally not caused because of an underlying problem, they can be very scary. So, here is a guide on how to stop a nosebleed if you get one.

What causes nosebleeds?

Our nose is a sensitive area and is filled with tiny blood vessels. It is fairly easy to injure them which can lead to a nosebleed.

*Dryness is one of the major causes of a nosebleed. Dry and cold weather can lead your nose to be cracked from within which can lead to a nosebleed.

*If you often pick your nose, you can slightly injure a nerve and that can also lead to nosebleeds.

*If you blow your nose too hard, you’d be constricting your blood vessels too much and that often leads to a nosebleed.

To find out about how to stop a nosebleed at home, Health Shots reached out to Dr. Suven Kalra, ENT Consultant at Max Super Speciality Hospital who told us about what should be done in such a case.

Here’s a step by step guide on how to stop a nosebleed:

Step 1

Prevention is better than cure. So if you have frequent nosebleeds, keep your nose moisturized using a bit of petroleum jelly, keep your fingernails short (especially for kids), avoid going out in dry and hot weather and keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water (8- 10 glasses a day).

Step 2

If nosebleed occurs, for first aid, pinch your nose hard in the lower soft part of the nose. Sit straight, do not lie down. Keep your nose pinched for 5 minutes, and breathe calmly through your mouth. Put an ice pack or anything cold over your head.

Step 3

If after pinching the nose, blood trickles into your throat, then spit it out and try not to swallow it.

Step 4

If after pinching for 5 minutes bleeding does not stop, hold your nose for another 5 minutes. If the bleeding still does not stop, call an ambulance.

Step 5

Nosebleeds are a common problem and most can be tackled easily with first aid. Anxiety and panic raises your blood pressure which causes further bleeding. So, try to stay calm.
