Milk has always been associated with strong and healthy bones. Milk has often been stereotyped as something that only kids need to have for their growth and development. While that is true, milk also needs to be consumed by adults, especially by women. According to various studies, after the age of 30, more than 51 percent of women suffer from weak bones. So, if the reason you are avoiding milk is because it has fats and is high in calories, you can always opt for skimmed milk and still enjoy all the benefits of milk. Let’s take a look at how you can make skimmed milk at home.

What is skimmed milk?

Skimmed milk or skim milk is nothing but another term for low fat milk. It has almost no fat – only around 0.1 percent fat. This low fat milk is made by removing the cream from the whole milk also known as buffalo milk.

Even though milk is not that fattening and can be had even if you are on a diet, for the extra cautious ones, skimmed milk, which is low in fat content, is the best option out there.

How to make skimmed milk at home?

Ingredients:

All you need to make skimmed milk is whole fat milk or buffalo milk. Remember that you can’t make skimmed milk from cow milk, so avoid taking that.

Method:

Step 1

Take a non-stick pan and add 3-4 tablespoons of water in it before adding the milk. This will ensure that the milk doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan and burn.

Step 2

Now, add the whole fat milk to the pan and heat on high flame for 10-15 minutes or until it boils.

Step 3

Once the buffalo milk is boiled, turn off the heat and let it cool down for 1-2 hours.

Step 4

Once the milk has cooled to room temperature, keep it in the refrigerator and leave it for 8-10 hours or a whole day if you want.

Step 5

This will allow the cream or malai of the milk to float to the top making it easy for you to remove with a spoon. Don’t throw away this cream. You can use malai to treat skin dryness or can also melt it to make its ghee.

Once this is done, you need to repeat the process two more times. The second time you boil the milk you will notice that it is producing less cream and by the third boil little to none will be left.

Step 7

After boiling the whole fat milk for three times and removing all the cream, your skimmed milk is ready!
