For many people, a morning cup of coffee is unavoidable since it helps them wake up and stay energized. What you may not realize is that it may also be used as a skin-awakening ingredient. Yes, although drinking a cup can give your energy levels an instant boost, applying it to your face can provide you with a slew of skin advantages. If you’re interested in giving it a try, but aren’t sure how to use coffee for skin, we’re here to help!

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, who explained the benefits of coffee for skin and listed ways to use it for the face.

“Coffee is slowly making its way up the ladder of preferred skin care ingredients. The reason is that it is a rich source of antioxidants that benefit the skin in a multitude of ways,”says Dr Kapoor.

Benefits of coffee for the skin

1. Excellent exfoliator

Coffee is a wonderful face scrub since it exfoliates the skin. “It gently exfoliates the skin cells and removes impurities, leaving the skin smooth and refreshed,” Dr Kapoor explains. Moreover, it can help enhance the look of cellulite and tighten your skin.

2. Make skin glow

A coffee mask reduces skin inflammation and enhances blood circulation, which tightens blood vessels and gives the skin a more radiant and brighter glow. It also minimizes the signs of fatigue.

3. Prevent skin ageing

Coffee is high in antioxidants such as phenols, which help fight free radicals and protect the skin from damage. As a result, fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin can be avoided. In fact, the antioxidants in coffee can help fight acne, increase collagen formation, and minimize hyper-pigmentation.

4. Reduce dark circle

Coffee is also known for its ability to moisturize, heal, and strengthen skin tonality. It is, in fact, an instant remedy for puffy eyes and is great for treating dark circles.

5. Reduces skin inflammation

Coffee scrubs reduce stretch marks and cellulite temporarily and give skin a smoother appearance.

Here are 5 ways to use coffee for skin:

1. Coffee face mask

In a bowl, add two tablespoons of ground coffee and two tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Mix the ingredients well to make a paste. Once you are done, apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

2. Coffee face scrub

Blend 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to get an even consistency. Now, apply this scrub on your face and all over your neck. Give a massage in circular motions for 5 minutes. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.

3. Coffee eye mask

To reduce the appearance of eye bags, blend ½ teaspoon of coffee with ½ teaspoon of olive oil and make a thick paste. Gently pat this paste under your eyes and leave it for about 10 minutes. Rinse off gently, and you will notice an immediate difference.

4. Coffee body scrub

For an exfoliating body scrub, mix ¼ cup of fresh coffee grounds, ¼ cup of brown sugar and some lemon juice to get the desired consistency. You can add a few drops of water to make a paste like texture. Use this scrub all over your body. Remember to use a gentle circular motion while scrubbing. Leave it for 5-10 minutes and then rinse, wipe and use a good moisturizing lotion.

5. Coffee and cold water

To reduce redness because of the sun, dilute one cup of freshly brewed coffee with cold water. Dip a soft cloth in water and wring out the excess water. Now gently pat your skin with this cloth. Use it many times a day to reduce swelling.

Word of caution

Do a patch test before using coffee on your skin. In addition, always remember to use a good moisturizer after using the scrub or the wash.
