5 ways for a skin detox to steer clear of monsoon woes

The monsoon has arrived already, and given the likelihood of skin issues, we have all been attempting to take extra care to protect our skin. Well, due to the heat and humidity this weather brings, viral and fungal illnesses are rather common during this time of year. Dermatitis, warts, heat rashes, eczema, and acne are some of these issues. If you want to protect or rescue your skin, you should learn how to detox your skin.

Health Shots spoke to Dr Amit Bangia, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Asian Hospital Faridabad, to understand the best ways to detox skin during the monsoon when the skin is more susceptible to infections, allergies, and other issues.

Here are 5 ways you can detox your skin:

1. Stay hydrated

Your skin requires some TLC if you want an inside-out radiance. Nothing is more effective for that than drinking water to help you cleanse. 8 to 10 glasses of water per day are recommended. According to Dr Bangia, “It’s the best detoxifier since it helps to accelerate the metabolism and remove the majority of toxins from the system.” The monsoon season can make your skin dry, dull, uneven, and wrinkled if you don’t drink enough water each day. So, stay hydrated!

2. Avoid spicy food

The season comes with a craving for tangy, spicy, and oily foods, so most people opt for fries, kachoris, or crispy pakodas. This hot, oily food raises body temperature and causes sweating, which causes oil to be secreted from the skin and can lead to acne and other problems. “Avoid salty and spicy foods because they might lead to bloating and water retention as well,” advises Dr Bangia. Instead, use drinks infused with lemon, apple cider vinegar, green tea, and tamarind.

3. Follow the CTM routine

Cleansing: Cleaning the skin with a gentle skin cleanser at least 3 times a day would help in removing dirt, debris, and impurities from the skin.

Toning: Use a water-based toner. It will tighten the pores, help remove oil, soothe your skin, help moisturise your skin, and balance pH levels.

Moisturising: After cleansing and toning, remember to apply a light moisturiser like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera to avoid a thick moisturiser like vaseline as it would block the pores.

4. Exfoliate

Your skin begins to behave weirdly during the monsoon. As a result, exfoliation is one of the most crucial skincare steps. Dead skin is removed through exfoliation, revealing clearer skin underneath. Additionally, it keeps your face oil-free and prevents acne. If you have oily skin, Dr Bangia advises exfoliating lightly 1-2 times a week with an apricot or walnut exfoliant.

5. DIY face pack

No matter what the season is, you should always use a DIY face pack once a week to keep your skin health in check. Opt for natural ingredients that suit your skin and can help retain the natural moisture of the skin.

Here’s a recipe for a tamarind (imli) based face mask:

  • Aloe vera gel is added to the imli pulp after extraction. Mix it.
  • Now add honey and water made from green tea.
  • Apply this gel-like mixture now to your skin and give it a gentle massage for at least five minutes.
  • Keep it on for 15 minutes. After that, rinse it.
