In the world of oral hygiene, brushing and flossing regularly are things we cannot miss to maintain healthy teeth. Still, plaque can end up making your teeth look yellow and cause all sorts of problems. But fear not, we’re here to share some remedies to remove plaque from teeth naturally.

What is plaque?

Plaque is a sticky, colourless film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums. It is a result of a build-up of bacteria that naturally occur in the mouth. Plaque can lead to yellow teeth, tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health problems if it is not removed regularly.

What causes plaque?

The main cause of plaque is the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. The mouth is home to a vast number of bacteria, and when these bacteria combine with food particles, saliva and other substances in the mouth, they can form a sticky film on the teeth and gums.

Some factors that contribute to the formation of plaque include poor oral hygiene, a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates, dry mouth and certain medical conditions that affect saliva production. If plaque is not removed regularly through proper oral hygiene, it can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Smoking and tobacco use can also contribute to the formation of plaque and increase the risk of gum disease. In addition, certain medications and medical conditions, such as diabetes, can also increase the risk of plaque formation.

How to remove plaque from teeth naturally?

1. Brush regularly with baking soda

Baking soda is a natural abrasive that can help remove plaque from your teeth. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water to form a paste. Use the paste to brush your teeth for 2-3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water. Baking soda can also help whiten your teeth and freshen your breath.

2. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for a few minutes to remove toxins and bacteria. A study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine found that oil pulling with coconut oil can significantly reduce plaque and gingivitis. Oil pulling can also help reduce inflammation and improve oral health.

3. Use apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural acid that can help dissolve plaque on your teeth. Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water and swish it in your mouth for 1-2 minutes, then rinse with water. However, be careful not to overuse apple cider vinegar as it can also damage your tooth enamel if used too frequently.

4. Chew sugar-free gum

Chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production, which can help wash away plaque and bacteria. A study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after meals significantly reduced plaque and prevented tooth decay. Choose a gum that contains xylitol, a natural sweetener that can also help prevent cavities.

A study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine found that using a mixture of salt and mustard oil as a mouthwash significantly reduced plaque and gingivitis. Mix a teaspoon of salt with a tablespoon of mustard oil and swish the mixture in your mouth for a few minutes before spitting it out and rinsing with water.

Apart from these home remedies, it is important to have a healthy diet which can also help prevent plaque buildup on your teeth. Avoid sugary and starchy foods, which can promote bacterial growth. Foods rich in calcium, such as cheese and yogurt, can help strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.

However, it is important to remember that these remedies are not a substitute for regular dental care. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and visit your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings. By following these tips, you can maintain a healthy, plaque-free smile for years to come!
