It is common to get lice in your or your kid’s hair during a season change. Lice can happen due to some fungal infection or are highly likely to be transferred from another person. You don’t have to panic, just follow simple home remedies to get rid of hair lice, which can lead to an itchy and irritated scalp.

4 natural ways to get rid of hair lice

1. Comb wet hair

It is usually advised not to comb your hair when wet but here the situation is different. Lice are not able to move quickly while your hair is wet, so take a fine-toothed comb, part your hair into very small sections, and move the comb at least thrice over each section. This traditional way might be time-consuming but is one of the best hair lice treatments and effective in removing hair lice naturally.

2. Oily hair combing

If you’re searching how to get rid of hair lice, trust the power of oil. For this, you will have to apply a thick layer of coconut or almond oil to your hair. Separate your hair into small sections and then run a fine-toothed comb over them. This process is called suffocating, as the lice find it extremely difficult to move when your hair is oily and can get easily caught in the comb.

In case you are not comfortable with applying a good quantity of oil to your hair, apply oil on your comb and then run it over your hair. You can re-apply the oil as needed. Wash your hair thoroughly after this and dry it. Make sure to wash your towel and comb after the treatment as you don’t want to leave any lice behind.

3. Essential oil treatment

There are various essential oils for hair lice treatment. These have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. The oils that you can try for hair lice removal are tea tree, lavender, neem, peppermint, and nutmeg. Just remember to not apply the essential oil directly to your hair. Always mix it with a carrier oil or vegetable oil and then use it. Mix 2 tablespoons of oil with 15-20 drops of any of the above-mentioned essential oil and apply it to your scalp using a cotton ball. It might sting a little, but don’t worry as that is the essential oil doing its job.

4. Vinegar and water

Apple cider vinegar has various benefits for your hair and if you are suffering from lice, this might be one of the best solutions. Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in half a cup of water and apply the mixture to your scalp with a cotton ball. Let it rest for at least half an hour and then comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb. This will surely sting your hair but is super effective.
