Recently, she revealed on a popular show that she did not follow a crazy diet but concentrated on portion control. Gill said that she started her day with tea and turmeric water. And now has started drinking apple cider vinegar.
Drinking turmeric water or apple cider vinegar in the morning has long been advocated as a good remedy for weight loss. But do these drinks actually work for someone trying to lose weight? We asked Priyanka Agarwal, Senior Clinical Nutritionist, (Institute of Minimal Access Bariatric and Robotic Surgery), Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi and Vaishali, Uttar Pradesh. Here’s what she has to say.
The nutritionist explained that adding turmeric to your diet can be beneficial for weight loss. “It contains curcumin, which is a source of antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has medicinal properties that can improve digestion, and increase metabolism, which can help you lose weight.”
A pinch of black pepper in turmeric water can help even more. How? Well, black pepper contains a component called piperine which boosts curcumin absorption, hence making it more effective, said the expert. It is also considered safe for people who have underlying diseases like diabetes, hypertension, etc.
When asked about the dosage of turmeric in water, she said, “There are no guidelines on the doses of turmeric in water. But people can add 500-2000 milligrams of turmeric is recommended to be taken every day.”
“If a person consumes 15 ml of apple cider vinegar (ACV) lost around 1.5 kg of weight in 3 months. Whereas, the people who consumed 30 ml of ACV for 3 months lost 1.7 kg,” Agarwal cited a 2009 Japanese study conducted by the Central Research Institute. However, apple cider vinegar for weight loss can only work if you eat a balanced diet and exercise, according to the nutritionist.
“ACV contains antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. It also contains 5-6 per cent acidic acid which reduces insulin sensitivity, which can result in weight gain. It is also rich in probiotics, making it a gut-friendly option to add to your diet. In other words, you can drink it in the morning.” However, you must include a balanced, low-calorie diet and some physical activity to achieve your weight loss goals.
Agarwal pointed out that ACV can be sour and can have an acidic reaction in some cases. “Avoid it if you suffer from such a problem. While there is no research on the exact dosage of ACV in your diet, she suggests that people can add up to 2-3 teaspoons or 10-15 ml of ACV in water.
The expert’s advice to everyone trying to lose weight is to not blindly follow the rule of drinking apple cider vinegar or turmeric water in the morning. You can include ACV and turmeric water in your diet but it will only help if you eat a healthy diet and exercise. Some people can be allergic or lead to some side effects.
