Don’t go by the fancy-schmancy name of sauerkraut, because it is nothing but fermented cabbage. Yup! That’s what it is. But just like it’s name, its health benefits will leave you surprisingly shocked. And FYI, if you are looking for a weight loss suggestion, then sauerkraut must be a part of your diet.
This fermenting process originated in China to preserve food. Sauerkraut is essentially a side dish, but weight loss advocates consider it an entire meal, especially when you are eating in small portions.
Sauerkraut aka fermented cabbage is loaded with all the essentials nutrients that your body needs:
1. Vitamins (C, K1, and B6)
2. Fibre
3. Protein
4. Potassium
5. Iron
6. Magnesium
7. Folate
8. Copper
9. Sodium
You now know why we’re going gaga over this wonder food!
It has almost zero carbs and that’s what makes it the best food to lose weight. Plus, after fermentation, the chemicals that are released in sauerkraut help in breaking down food much faster, making the digestive process more effective.
Fermentation of the cabbage leads to the creation of probiotics, which we already know are great for the gut. Also, cabbage is loaded with fibre, so if you have any bowel issues, you must certainly add sauerkraut to your diet.
According to a study published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, our gut has a very intimate relationship with our brain. The study reveals that when you consume the probiotics present in sauerkraut, your brain capacity automatically improves!
Another study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology also suggests that people with mental health issues like OCD, anxiety, and depression must consume fermented food regularly to maintain their well-being.
Also, watch:
You get strong bones if you eat sauerkraut daily, because of the presence of vitamin K in it. To bind protein and calcium, you need vitamin K in your body. This process helps in better absorption of calcium in the body, which improves your bone density.
Fibres and probiotics are really good for the heart, period. Both these things also help in reducing cholesterol levels in the body, which helps your heart to function properly.
To prepare sauerkraut, all you need is cabbage, water, and salt. But if you like, you can add other veggies like carrot, onion, beet, garlic, etc, as per your preference.
Wash the cabbage properly and shred it nice and thin. Now, add salt as per taste and rub over it. Now add 1/4th cup of water and mix it well. Store it in an air-tight jar for one to two weeks, and relish once it is ready. Remember not to put it under direct sunlight.
You can add sauerkraut to a bowl of soup, salad, sandwich, etc to make it more interesting.
So ladies, it’s time to be sauerkraut-ready!
