Every evening, when the clock strikes four, our stomachs start to growl. At this point, it’s hard to curb your cravings, and if you don’t keep healthy snacking options ready, then don’t blame us if you fall prey to junk like biscuits, chips and the like. What if we have a solution? Yes ladies, it’s time to go nuts about fox nuts or makhanas, says celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija

In her recent Instagram post, she writes, “Another stellar Indian superfood! An easy snacking option. Zip lock it and keep it in your purse, briefcase, car or drawer for when a food emergency arises.”

Makhanas are often confused with lotus seeds, but they are very different. Pooja adds, “Home roasted ones are better than the commercially flavoured ones as those may have a lot of added fats (that’s why the masala sticks to it).”

Why are makhanas so beneficial?

They are high in fibre, satiate hunger, curb appetite, have low GI, and are also great for diabetics. What’s more, they are gluten free, corn free, rich in protein, and contain less calories than popcorn. Yes, it’s true! Pooja shares that makhanas have 67% less fat, 20% less calories, and 50% more protein than popcorn.

They are also loaded with calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. You will be surprised to know that they contain a good amount of carbs in each serving. Calcium is particularly helpful to strengthen bones, reduce blood pressure, and decrease cholesterol levels. On the other hand, magnesium helps to accelerate the metabolic reactions in the body.
