Bone broth has gained a lot of popularity, especially among health-conscious people recently. So much that it is being touted as the ultimate health and beauty elixir by nutritionists and the beauty world alike. This is due to the fact that there are numerous health benefits of bone broth, especially in winters.
Many confuse a bone broth with a meat stock. However, the two are different mainly due to the amount of time they are cooked on low heat. It is supposedly known to leach out more nutrients and minerals as the liquid cooks for longer. In order to make broth, one needs to simmer the bones for a long time.
To list the ultimate benefits of drinking bone broth, Healthshots spoke to Ms Rubaina Adhikari, a dietician and fitness enthusiast based in Mumbai.
“Bone broth is full of nutrients, and it is quite beneficial in the winter season. Bone broth is incredibly nutritious, and including it in your diet could give a slew of health benefits in the winter season”, says Adhikari.
Bone broths are easily digestible and high in nutrients, making them an excellent approach to strengthen your immune system. They can help you not only avoid seasonal ailments, but also recover if you get a cough, cold, or flu.
“Collagen, found in bone broths, is not only important for joint health but also assists bowel motions. Apart from that, essential amino acids present in bone broth aid in the formation and maintenance of good gut flora, which is necessary for a variety of tasks other than digestion.” says Adhikari.
As the name suggests, bone broth is an excellent food source for healthy bones and teeth. Not to forget, It is oozing with calcium, phosphorus, and potassium which can let your own bones become stronger and healthy.
Patients suffering from joint pain are prescribed glucosamine supplements to treat them. However, it turns out that bone broth is brimming with glucosamine, too. Sipping on bone broth can reduce joint pain and help increase the lubrication in joints, minus the pills!
“Collagen, along with other chemicals such as glucosamine and chondroitin, is well known for improving joint health, reducing joint discomfort, and perhaps preventing osteoarthritis. Bone broths are high in these nutrients, therefore consuming them on a daily basis can greatly benefit your joint health,” adds Adhikari.
Bone broth contains a whopping quantity of protein (6 grams per cup) in it. The essential amino acids which are the building blocks of protein must be obtained externally. Since, these amino acids are not synthesized in the body itself. Bone broth can help supply amino acids to your body. These amino acids play an important role in muscle recovery and energy during your fitness journey.
“Bone broth is the new rage now, but don’t worry if you are vegan. You may still reap the advantages of bone broth.” adds Adhikari.
There is a new term ‘vegan broth’. It may be misleading but this alternative is made out of plant-based elements. They may have anti-inflammatory, gut-healing, antioxidant-boosting, and joint-healing qualities without the bones. Vegetables, especially mushrooms, seaweed, natural herbs, and aromatics are used to make this vegan broth.
Just follow the same procedure as you would do for a bone broth. This will yield a rich and powerful soup with a delightful flavor that is both warming and restorative. Enjoy it hot!
