Indian cuisine is enriched and makes use of various spices like garlic, turmeric, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. These are all recognized to have immune-boosting antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant effects. These spices, when added regularly in meals, helps the body fight infections and maintain excellent health. They also provide your food flavour, in addition to all of the above. So, how about enhancing the flavour of your coffee by adding a few spices? Adding spices can add extra flavour in coffee!

Health Shots spoke to Deepti Lokeshappa, Msc Food Science and Nutrition, Senior Consultant-Clinical Nutritionist, Motherhood Hospital, Bengaluru, to suggest some best spices which can be added to coffee and can enhance its flavour and benefits.

Coffee helps some of us to get through the day. Our preferences of coffee can be different but it helps most of us stay wide awake and work on busy days. People like to experiment with their cup of coffee with different sweeteners or creamers but there is a lot more than that you can do with coffee.

Here are 5 spices that you add to your coffee:

Experimenting with your coffee by adding spices to it can bring you more healthy, aromatic and tasty results. Here are some spices you can use:

1. Cinnamon (Dalchini)

Instead of lemon water, so many individuals begin their day with cinnamon tea. To spice up your morning, you may also add this amazing spice to your cup of coffee. “It possesses antioxidant content and has been proved to strengthen the immune system,” according to Lokeshappa. Additionally, it has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol, control blood sugar, and fight inflammation. Furthermore, it tastes fantastic!

2. Cardamom (Elaichi)

Simply add a small amount of it to a cup of freshly brewed coffee to experience its wonderful flavour and aroma. It contains fibre as well as additional necessary minerals that are believed to enhance blood circulation. Cardamom might be beneficial for issues including indigestion, gas, acidity, and constipation. If you have poor breath and experience nausea and vomiting, cardamom can help. Add it the next time and relax and enjoy.

3. Clove (Laung)

Clove is a typical kitchen spice that can be added to coffee for both flavour and health advantages. In addition to soups, cloves go nicely with drinks and desserts as well. Additionally, you can put it in your coffee. According to Lokeshappa, “We can’t brag enough about the benefits of it. It will give you a very musky taste.” When brewing coffee, add a few cloves to the coffee grounds. You must be careful not to overdo the clove in your coffee.

4. Nutmeg (Jaiphal)

Vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, and other minerals that are essential for good health are abundant in nutmeg, also known as jaiphal. It can help prevent digestive problems, improve blood circulation, reduce stress, improve quality of sleep, and get rid of bad breath because of all these nutrients. Lokeshappa says, “It will add that extra sweetness to the taste and aroma of your coffee.” Just add the right mixture of it in your cup.

5. Ginger (Adrak)

Ginger is well known for its medicinal benefits. Lokeshappa says, “Ginger is quite similar to cardamom but ginger is more easily available in Indian households.” Just add a few slices or powder of it to your coffee before you brew. You should definitely add it in your meal as well, as it helps prevent seasonal infection by keeping your immunity strong.
