No Indian fast is complete without sabudana. And now that navratri has already begun, how can we forget about this quintessential food also known as sago?  From sabudana khichdi to sabudana tikki, this superfood not only makes fasts tastier but also healthier.

To know all the health benefits of sabudana, we reached out to Dr Namita Nadar, head nutritionist, Fortis Hospital, Noida. And she says: “Sabudana has many benefits to offer, especially when combined with fibre-rich foods. So having sabudana along with vegetables or fruits that are rich in fibre is an excellent combination and can be easily incorporated in your diet.”

Apart from this, she shared five benefits of sabudana or sago, so that you can include this food in your diet, even after the festive season is over.

1. It regulates blood pressure

“Sabudana contains potassium which promotes healthy blood flow and keeps your blood pressure in check. With a healthy blood flow in the body, the stress on your heart reduces,” says Dr Nadar.

2. Promotes foetus growth in pregnant women

If you are pregnant then including sago in your diet can be beneficial for you and your unborn child. Dr Nadar says: “Sabudana is rich in vitamin b6 and folate which are some of the essential nutrients required for the proper growth of the foetus. Having sabudana can ensure the proper development of the brain.”

3. Gives you energy

Sabudana is rich in carbohydrates and gives you much needed energy. That’s the reason why it is considered essential when you’re fasting. If you are someone who is looking to gain weight in a healthy manner, then adding sabudana in your diet can be beneficial as it is power packed with carbohydrates.

4. It can relieve you from constipation

“Sabudana aids digestion and relieves any issue related to it such as constipation and gas,” says Dr Nadar. This is because sabudana consists of resistant starch that functions like fibre in the digestive system and improves gut health.

5. Improves your bone health

Dr Nadar says, “Sabudana contains calcium, magnesium, and iron which increase bone density and thereby promotes good bone health. This can further prevent any bone related issues such as arthritis and osteoporosis.”

However, it’s not a good food for diabetics

Dr Nadar warns that since sabudana is high in carbohydrates, it has a very high glycemic index which can trigger blood sugar levels in a diabetic patient. So, if you are diabetic, it is better to skip this food.
