The summer season is upon us, and we are already hating the harsh afternoons that leave us drenched in sweat. This is the time when we feel particularly drained and dehydrated, and want to chill our systems with sweetened drinks. But steer clear of them as they are high in sugar and contain empty calories. What are the health benefits of paan or betel leaves?

From using it as part of religious ceremonies to eating it in the form of a ‘paan’, betel leaves have been in use by Indians for ages. Ayurveda has mentioned many curative and healing health benefits of betel leaves.

In her recent Instagram post, Savaliya writes, “It is widely used in the treatment of cough, asthma, headache, rhinitis, arthritic joint pain, anorexia, etc. It relieves pain, inflammation and swelling. It is best used in kapha disorders.”

The leaves are packed with vitamins like vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and carotene, and are also a great source of calcium. Since betel is an aromatic creeper, you can easily grow it as an ornamental plant in your home and derive the maximum health benefits from the same. It also helps to increase pitta dosha and balances kapha and vata dosha.

Here’s the recipe of the mouth-watering paan shots made using betel leaves

“Paan is hot in nature but paan shots are cooling, as they contain gulkand, coconut and fennel seeds. So, sip on these paan shots and keep summer heat at bay,” says Dr Savaliya.

The ingredients you need:

4 paan (betel leaves), torn into small pieces
4 tsp gulkand
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp grated coconut
1 tbsp rock sugar/misri (optional)
1/4th cup water

Recipe:

1. First of all add the pieces of paan in the mixer.
2. Add all other ingredients except water and blend them for a few seconds.
3. Next, add water and blend until smooth.
4. Your paan shots are ready.
