We’ve mostly come across makhanas as a fasting food but it is only recently that people are realizing that it makes for the perfect snack which can be flavoured in different ways for variety.

Also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, makhanas can be prepared in a way that is yummy while also retaining all the health benefits it has to offer. In fact, you will find that there are multiple flavours you can lend to it but if you’re a true blue spicy food lover, then you’ll love this masala makhana recipe for the tangy punch it packs along with the nutrients it can add to your diet.

What’s more? It doesn’t require any elaborate preparation and the cooking time is only about 15 to 20 minutes!

Things you will need

100 gms makhana
4 tsp olive oil
¼ tsp red chilli powder
½ tsp turmeric powder
¼ tsp pepper
½ tsp chaat masala
Amchur to taste
Salt to taste

Here’s how to make it:

1. Heat half the olive oil in a pan on low heat. Add the makhana to it for roasting. Make sure you keep moving around the pieces with a ladle to ensure the makhana doesn’t get burnt.

2. It’ll take only a few minutes for the makhanas to be properly roasted. Hence, ensure that you check in about 5 to 7 minutes. The makhana should crack easily with a crunching sound when done. Shift it to a bowl and keep aside.

3. Now, heat the remaining olive oil in a pan on low flame. Add all the spices to it and fry them for a couple of minutes on medium heat. Note: don’t let the spices burn.

4. Add the makhanas to the spice mix and toss the mixture so as to coat all the pieces with the masala. Cook for a few more minutes on low flame. And there you go! Your masala makhanas are ready.
