Here are 6 benefits of coffee for weight loss:

1. Contains stimulants

Coffee is renowned for its high caffeine content, which acts as a stimulant. As per a study published by Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology, caffeine stimulates the thermogenesis effect, which is the process that helps the body generate heat and burn calories. This thermogenic effect can increase energy expenditure during exercise, helping in weight loss.

2. Suppresses appetite

Apart from caffeine, chlorogenic acid is also one of the main biologically active compounds in coffee, which is known to suppress the appetite, making you eat less. “These appetite-suppressing properties of coffee may make you feel full for a longer period of time, thus decreasing the risk of overeating,” says Reenu Dubey, a consultant dietician. 3. Boosts metabolic rate

The rate at which you burn calories when you rest is called resting metabolic rate (RMR). The higher your metabolic rate, the easier it is for you to lose weight. Coffee contains bioactive compounds, such as chlorogenic acids and polyphenols, that have been shown to increase metabolic rate, including improved insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, according to a study published by Molecules. These effects refer to the number of calories your body burns at rest.

Note one thing caffeine can boost the metabolic rate and increase fat burning in the short term only. After a while, when you become tolerant of the effects, it may stop working.

4. Mobilises fat from fat tissue

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, which sends signals to release the stored fat from fat tissues. Once fat is released into the bloodstream, it can be used as fuel during exercise. “This process, known as lipolysis, contributes to the breakdown of body fat and can potentially aid in weight loss when combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity,” explains Dubey.

6. Reduces water retention

“Caffeine is a natural diuretic, meaning it increases urine production,” explains Dubey. This can help to reduce water retention and bloating, which are common concerns for people trying to lose weight. This effect is temporary and primarily related to reducing excess water weight.
