The classic fresh and sweet papaya has its own distinct flavour and smell. Some may go nuts over it while some despise it. However, there’s nobody who has never tasted one due to its wide availability in the Asian market. A bowl of freshly cubed radiant and ripe papaya beats the other fruits with its humility. And, not to forget, how everyone yaps about the mighty benefits of papaya. Regardless of this, some side effects of papaya come into the picture if you go absolutely nuts for it!
As they say, overeating anything is harmful! One must stick to the moderate quantity or daily dosage of whatever is in the menu. Same goes for papaya and many of your favorite fruits too! I know, some fruits taste too good to just stop but you got to swat your own hand when overindulging in them. Papaya has a boastful list of benefits! From maintaining heart health, and lowering cholesterol to promoting bowel movement, papaya has incredible benefits. Nevertheless, these rather negative effects of papaya will make you stop gorging on it too much!
HealthShots spoke to Ms Rubaina Adhikari, a dietician and fitness enthusiast based in Mumbai about the ill effects of over-consumption of papaya.
“Papaya is among the healthiest and tastiest fruits available. It’s high in nutrients and has a number of health benefits. But a few people are aware that it also has some side effects if consumed in excess.” says Adhikari.
Due to beta carotene in the papaya, overeating papaya may cause skin darkening, which is medically known as carotenemia. It’s a disorder in which the whites of your eyes and palms turn pale yellow as if you’re suffering from jaundice.
Papaya should not be consumed in excess as it can cause a variety of respiratory problems, including blocked breathing, wheezing, chronic nasal congestion, fever, and asthma.
Although the fruit is excellent for your stomach, excessive eating might cause digestive problems. The high fiber content, including the latex from the papaya’s peel, produces stomach distress.
Keep these ill-effects of papaya in mind before grabbing that bowl of your favorite fruit!
