After a long day at work, you just want to get into those comfy pyjamas, put on your favourite show, and sip on a glass of wine! Sounds perfect, right? But is that something that you can do daily? If yes, is it healthy? Read on to find out more.
There have been claims that if consumed in moderation (one glass a day), a glass of wine can keep some health woes away. Well, it’s not as simple as that. At least that’s what Dr Siddhant Bhargava tells us in his recent Instagram video.
Here’s what his post says, “What do you think? Should we all start drinking wine daily? Will it really help our body, or is this just another alcoholic’s way of telling you ‘Chal be, daaru peete hain’?.” Check out the post for yourself!
The answer to this is NO. Wine does contain an antioxidant, resveratrol, which slows down aging, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and also brings down premature cell death.
If there are so many benefits, why is it wrong to have wine every single day? As Dr Bhargava puts it across in jest, “It’s just like riding a bike without hands.”
Red wine can also cause headaches in certain people, as mentioned by celeb nutritionist Kavita Devgan in her Facebook post.
“Maybe you have #RedWineHeadacheSyndrome due to lack of enzymes that metabolise histamines (H) that red wine has, leading to release of antihistamines. That can cause high blood pressure and headaches,” she writes, adding that maximum histamines are found in red wine, followed by champagnes (sparkling wine) and then white wines.
Dr Bhargava suggests everyone to have grapes daily, and enjoy wine once in a while.
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, resveratrol inhibits cancer growth in the skin and breast.
Research suggests that grapes are good for your heart. That’s because they contain a wide variety of nutrients, including polyphenols, potassium, and anti-inflammatory properties, as mentioned by the American Heart Association (AHA).
As per a study by researchers at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami (Florida), grapes are packed with antioxidants that can help to fight vision issues.
A study published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy reveals that resveratrol present in grapes can treat acne. That’s not all — another study from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) says that when benzoyl peroxide is used in conjunction with resveratrol, the results are even better.
So ladies, nosh on grapes every day, and leave the wine for special occasions!
