Is keto an unhealthy diet?

For the unversed, the terms ‘keto’ or ‘ketogenic diet’ refers to a high-fat, low-carb diet that promotes the burning of more calories and fat. While it may have gained popularity over time, it may have its drawbacks too.

Health Shots asked Divya Gopal, Consultant – Dietitian/Nutritionist, Motherhood Hospitals, Banashankari, Bengaluru about why one should go for a vegan diet over a keto diet. Gopal says, “There are several reasons and conditions why someone should think twice before starting a keto diet.”

5 reasons why a keto diet may not be the right choice for you

1. Pregnant mother

The expectant mother needs to be very attentive to her nutrition and eating habits throughout pregnancy. Actually, the keto diet deprives them of fiber and carbohydrates. Additionally, an excessively restrictive diet is hazardous during pregnancy since it lacks key crucial vitamins. On other hand, a vegan diet is a good and healthier option for pregnant women.

2. Vegans

For vegans, maintaining a ketogenic diet is considerably riskier and more difficult than it is for vegetarians. This diet limits the consumption of foods heavy in fiber and carbohydrates, such as some fruits, whole grains, and vegetables.

3. Intestinal disease

One of the most common side effects of the keto diet is constipation. People who follow this diet frequently experience constipation due to the minimal consumption of fiber and carbohydrates. Those who eat a vegan diet have fewer digestive problems.

4. Kidney problem

Since a ketogenic diet is high in fat, your kidneys must work very hard to break down the fat and remove additional fat from your body. But a vegan diet can slow down the progression of kidney diseases.
