Be it weight loss or stronger muscles, exercising means you will reap health benefits. Beyond physical wellness, there are mental health benefits of exercise. Studies have shown exercising helps your mental health too. According to a study published by JAMA Psychiatry, walking for an hour or running for 15 minutes every day might help to reduce the risk of having depression. It is a common mental disorder, and as per the World Health Organization, an estimated 5 percent of adults across the globe suffer from depression. So, if you feel low, you can always sweat it out because exercises can boost your mood!

Health Shots reached out to Gurugram-based fitness expert Vipin Yadav to help you with a list of exercises you can do to uplift your mood.

Exercises to boost your mood

Some might think that running can help to release pent-up emotions. But for others, it might be a little too much, especially if they are not following a regular fitness regime. Here are some other exercises you can turn to whenever you feel a little low.

1. Walking

There are many benefits of walking has many benefits. If there is greenery near your house, it’s even better. Spending time in nature and observing simple things in life can be rejuvenating. Yadav says find a nearby hiking trail or a park with scenic walking paths. Breathe in the fresh air, soak up the natural surroundings and let it all uplift your mood.

2. Yoga

It is an excellent exercise that combines physical movement with deep breathing and mindfulness. Find a quiet space in your home or join a local class. Focus on stretching, strengthening and connecting your mind with your body.

3. Dance workout

Dancing is a fantastic way to uplift your mood and get your body moving. Put on your favourite upbeat music and dance around freely.

4. Outdoor cycling

If you have a cycle that has been lying in your garage for long, it is time to take it out. Take your exercise outdoors by going for a bike ride. The expert says that cycling allows you to explore the outdoors, enjoy fresh air, and experience the thrill of the movement. It’s a low-impact cardio exercise that helps to uplift your mood and improve overall fitness.

Go for group fitness classes

If you want some company, you can also attend group fitness classes focusing on kickboxing or circuit training. They can provide an energetic and supportive environment. Exercising with others can be motivating, and the social interaction can further boost your mood.

Yadav says that these exercises can help to increase self-confidence, reduce stress, increase motivation and discipline, enhanced body awareness apart from giving you enjoyment.

As for the best time to exercise, it is the time that allows you to be consistent and enjoy the activity. So, find a time slot that aligns with your daily routine, energy levels and personal preferences. The expert says that any time of day is suitable for exercise, and the most crucial aspect is maintaining regular physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. But he suggests that morning should be your preferred exercise time because it can boost metabolism, increase focus and set a positive tone for the day. Morning workouts can also be beneficial for establishing a consistent routine.
