Every week, we wait with bated breath for Bollywood’s favourite yogini, Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s Monday motivation posts. This time around, she has surprised us all, and showed us all how real she is! The struggle to exercise on a Monday is so relatable, and you will laugh your heart out, just seeing how she’s dragging herself on the mat.

Here’s what she writes in the post, “Today’s fitness session was as long as January 2022 has been. End of the month motivation is just about lying down on the mat and mentally preparing myself for the new month ahead. But yes, even I have days like this. The only thing that motivates me is “your love”… and then, I’m at it again.”

Does your body require rest?

We can joke around as much as we want, but it’s true — just like nutrition and exercise, rest is equally important for our bodies. That’s because if you do NOT rest, your body will experience fatigue and exertion caused by hormesis, which essentially means low doses of stress that your body experiences, while continuously working out.

Fitness expert and functional medicine coach Vijay Thakkar tells Health Shots, “Yes. Any physical trainer you go to or a fitness coach you approach would probably design a workout schedule that will have at least one rest day between every 3 to 10 workout days. The number of rest days required depends on the intensity of the physical training you are undertaking, and the objective you wish to achieve by taking that particular fitness program.”

Does taking rest help your body?

Truly, it does. Here are some benefits of taking rest:

1. It helps you build more consistency, and that means you are likely to be more regular with your workouts.
2. The cells called fibroblasts in your body heal the microscopic tears in your body that happen, as a consequence of exercising regularly. When repair of muscle cells happens, you will also burn more calories at rest.
3. Proper resting will also ensure that you do not injure yourself, while working out.

So ladies, it is absolutely normal to experience those Monday blues, and take time off from workouts (but occasionally). This break will help you bounce back better, we say!

Keep an idea of your risk of weight-related issues.
