What are some benefits of Pilates during pregnancy?

1. Strengthens your abdominal muscles

When you are pregnant, your body releases a hormone called relaxin that causes ligaments in your body to become more flexible. This, in turn, can lead to pelvic pain and lower back issues. When you work towards strengthening your abdominal muscles, you are less likely to develop these other issues.

2. Reduces back pain

With regular practice of Pilates, you also learn to improve your posture. Since your posture undergoes a shift as your baby grows, doing regular movement under the guidance of an expert is very important.

3. Builds your pelvic floor

The weight of your baby as well as the hormonal changes that your body goes through during pregnancy can weaken your pelvic floor muscles. Thanks to Pilates, these muscles get strengthened and also help to prevent urinary incontinence, which is common during pregnancy.

4. Helps control your breathing

Breathing is a key focus, as part of all prenatal Pilates classes, and proves to be helpful for both the mother and baby. Having control over breathing also helps these mothers through labour. Sometimes, stiffness in your upper back can develop, as a result of the belly growing. Exercises like opening up your arms can also help to enhance flexibility.

5. Helps to maintain a healthy weight

While gaining weight is a part of pregnancy, it is important to stay within an optimum range, for the health of the mother and baby. It can also cause the mother to contract gestational diabetes. That’s why, exercising daily can help to maintain a healthy weight, so that your journey is rather smooth!

Whatever exercises you may choose to do, please consult your doctor first so that the type, duration and intensity of your physical movements, is tailored to your needs and ability.

Keep an idea of your risk of weight-related issues.
