What’s better than watching television, being glued to the phone and eating junk during summer vacation when it comes to kids? Well, some physical activity it is! As we inch towards International Yoga Day, which falls on June 21 annually, it is important to spread awareness about the importance of yoga for kids. With its dynamic poses, yoga becomes a thrilling activity that will have your little one eager to join in. As children are naturally agile and bursting with energy, yoga offers the perfect outlet for their boundless spirit during the summer break. Here are some yoga poses that will keep your child active and entertained throughout the summer vacation.

Benefits of yoga for kids

1. Yoga can help you bond with your child

“Practising yoga with your kids can be a bonding experience. By making it a collaborative exercise, you can tap into each other’s skills and expertise,” says Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Founder of Akshar Yoga Institutions. Encourage your child to play and explore on the yoga mat, turning yoga into a game rather than a serious pursuit. Make it fun, fascinating, and captivating enough to captivate their interest and encourage their creativity. This shared experience will not only strengthen your bond but also make yoga an enjoyable activity for the whole family.

2. Yoga builds discipline

During the initial weeks, aim to establish a morning yoga routine with your child. Akshar says that by encouraging them to practice regularly, you can help them develop a lifelong habit of being more active. To assist your child in adjusting to the consistency of yoga exercises, commit to doing the postures together for at least two to three weeks. Consistency is key in building discipline and making yoga an integral part of your child’s routine.

3. It is productive use of time

Summer vacation presents an excellent opportunity for children to engage in activities that not only entertain them but also contribute to their personal growth and development. Yoga offers numerous benefits for children, both physically and mentally. By incorporating yoga into their daily routine, children can make the most of their vacation in a productive and meaningful way.

Yoga poses for kids during summer vacation

Here are some beginner-friendly yoga poses that kids can try during their summer vacation, suggests Akshar.

1. Santolanasana (Plank Pose)

This will help in strengthening the core and building overall body strength. Start in a prone position, that is lie on your stomach, then with palms under your shoulders, lift your chest, stomach, and knees off the ground. Hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

2. Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

This will help improve posture and balance of children. Stand tall with your feet together, toes touching, and heels slightly apart. Distribute your weight evenly on both feet. You need to keep your spine straight and shoulders relaxed. Let your arms hang naturally by your sides with your palms facing forward. Take slow, deep breaths as you hold this pose for a few moments.

3. Naukasana (Boat Pose)

This pose helps to engage the core and improve balance. First you need to lie down on your back with your arms by your sides. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, lift your upper body and legs off the ground simultaneously. Extend your arms forward towards your feet, keeping them parallel to the ground. Engage your abdominal muscles to maintain balance. Hold this pose for a while and then release.

4. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

This will help to stretch the back muscles and open the chest. Lie on your stomach with your legs extended and tops of your feet resting on the mat. Place your palms under your shoulders, keeping your elbows close to your body. Inhale deeply and slowly lift your head, chest, and upper body off the ground. Keep your navel firmly planted on the floor and push through the tops of your feet to lift your legs slightly. Breathe deeply as you hold the pose, feeling a gentle stretch in your spine. To release, exhale and gently lower your body back down to the mat.

5. Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose)

This yoga pose will promote digestion and calmness in kids. Start by kneeling on the mat, sitting back on your heels. Keep your knees together and feet slightly apart. Place your palms on your thighs. Straighten your back, elongating your spine. Relax your shoulders and maintain a comfortable posture. Hold this pose for a few breaths, focusing on your breath and grounding yourself.
