Aplastic anemia is a condition that occurs when any person’s body stops producing enough new blood cells within his or her body. Aplastic Anemia is related to both paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and to the Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
What happens in aplastic anemia?
Aplastic anemia is a rare, non-cancerous disorder, where the bone marrow in the human body is unable to adequately produce blood cells required for survival.

The condition leaves a person fatigued and more prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding. A rare and serious condition, aplastic anemia can develop at any age. Aplastic anemia can be caused by exposure to certain chemicals, drugs, radiation, infection, and immune diseases in most of the cases, although a definitive cause is still unknown.

It is neither a hereditary condition, nor is it contagious. It can be acquired due to exposure to other conditions but if a person develops the condition, their offspring would not develop it by virtue of their genetic relationship. For many years, the cause of acquired aplastic anemia was not clear. Now, autoimmune processes are considered to be responsible for the occurrence of this disease.

What causes aplastic anemia?
The majority of cases are hypothesized to be the result of T-cell mediated autoimmunity and destruction of the bone marrow, which leads to defective or nearly absent hematopoiesis. It is suggested that unidentified antigens cause a polyclonal expansion of dysregulated CD4+ T-cells and overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, such as, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α. Ex vivo bone marrow models show an expansion of dysregulated CD8+ T-cell populations. Activated T lymphocytes also induce apoptosis in the hematopoietic stem cells.
