To be successful in a stressful profession like orthopedics, it demands dedication, skill, knowledge and be equipped to embrace the latest technology for better patient outcome. Expertise is essential, so is caring and personable attitude toward one’s patients. “Passion and hard work are keystone to success in
any profession, but in medical profession like ours, one can’t even think of surviving without it,” says Dr Shekhar Srivastav, Senior Orthopedics Consultant and Head of the Department of Sant Parmanand Hospital, Delhi.

After completing his masters, Dr Srivastav came to Delhi in 1999 to learn finer nuances of joint replacements. He was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work under stalwarts like Dr S.M. Tuli and Dr Shekhar Agarwal. All successful
orthopedic surgeons have years of medical training. The most outstanding, however, have excellent dexterity and hand coordination and Dr Shekhar is one among them. He has received training at various renowned centres across the
globe. He did his Fellowship from Austria and Germany.

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr Shekhar, Sant Parmanand Hospital, Delhi has now installed the Cuvis Joint system, which is the world’s most advanced and Delhi’s only fully active Robotic system. It is a fully active Robotic joint replacement system which is technologically the most advanced amongst its peers.

It is completely autonomous in nature with least human interference required thereby leading to reduced possibility of human errors and possibility of intra-operative infections.

Dr Shekhar Srivastav, who has received training in Robotic Surgery and performed Delhi’s first Robotic Knee Replacement with fully active Robotic system informs, “In conventional techniques, the planning is usually done on X rays and then manual jigs are available for reshaping the bone ends for implantation of the implants. In Robotic Surgeries, the planning is done on CT scan of the entire limb which helps in preparing a customised plan for each knee. Then this plan is executed to the perfection by the Robotic Arm under
the supervision of the surgeon. If we are to differentiate currently available knee replacement Robotic systems, they are briefly classified as passive, semi-active and active systems. Cuvis system is a fully active system which is completely autonomous in nature. Moreover, it is safe with real-time bone monitoring to detect any kind of bone movement of patient during procedure.”

Cuvis Joint Robotic Technology has brought sub-millimeter dimensional cutting precision and accuracy in placement of implants in perfect alignment for better function and longevity. Pre-operative CT scan helps in creating a virtual 3D model of the patient’s knee so that every patient’s gets a personalized plan.
Personalised pre-operative planning helps in preserving bones and soft tissues leading to faster and relatively painless recovery. At the same time, accurate fit and alignment leads to better longevity of the implants.

Dr Shekhar has always been at the forefront of adopting newer technology for the benefit of the patients. Be it Robotics, Cartilage transplantation, Sports surgery or Regenerative medicine. He is one of the pioneer surgeons in North India to have acquired training in Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery.

He is an invited faculty to various national and international conferences and also has numerous publications to his credit. He has been on board of various orthopedics associations and at present he is the honorary secretary of Delhi Orthopedics Association.
