Spending time outdoors helps rejuvenate the mind, and provides many benefits that sunlight can offer for your overall health and wellbeing. However, abundant sun exposure could also be harmful. Sunlight could cause damage to the skin, by continuous exposure to the sun by way of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
To manage this issue, we often rely on sunscreen. Sunscreens are vital to protect your skin, as they contain filters that reflect or scatter UV radiation.
Each sunscreen has its own ‘SPF’ (sun protection factor) level, which is a rating to help determine for how long one can stay in the sun, without running the risk of getting sunburned, while wearing sunscreen. A simple way to understand is to consider that if it takes 20 minutes to experience sunburn without sunscreen, then a sunscreen with an SPF 10, will allow you to be outside 10 times longer (3 hours 30 minutes) before your skin gets burned.
Here are three reasons why you cannot miss applying a sunscreen
As per research published by Harvard Medical School, approximately 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching our skin is ultraviolet A (UVA) light, which is responsible for chronic effects such as photoaging, wrinkling, and age spots. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are the primary cause of sunburns. The study highlights how both UVA and UVB may cause skin cancer. Therefore, applying sunscreen with appropriate SPF levels could help prevent skin cancer!

The health benefits of sunlight are beyond contradiction, especially when it comes to maintaining vitamin D levels in our body. However, a depleting ozone layer, coupled with harmful impact of UV rays are a recipe for disaster.
Sunscreen application would be beneficial to solve this conundrum, as you would be able to step out in the sun, and yet be protected against UV rays penetrating the skin, and causing various skin disorders. UV rays are associated with collagen damage, ageing, sunspots, and skin blemishes.
Boosts skin’s health
Sunburns can lead to darkening, ageing, and bruising of skin. It could also cause swelling, tching, redness, and peeling. Application of sunscreen can help prevent these skin related issues, and also provide protection against breakouts such as acne. Sunscreen is also critical to protect essential skin proteins that boost skin health, such as collagen, elastin, and keratin. Age indicators, like fine lines and wrinkles, are also hindered by the usage of sunscreen.
Sunscreen application is an important skin care habit that could be maintained all-year long.
So, ladies, keep these considerations in mind, and enhance your sun protection strategy, by applying sunscreen regularly!
